Inspiration from Thanh Hoa

Hanoi University of Science and Technology, a renowned institution with a top-tier training and competency assessment system in Vietnam, recently held its first graduation ceremony of 2025 for over 3,000 new engineers and bachelors. Ngo Van Tan, a former student specializing in Mathematics at Lam Son High School for Gifted Students, was honored to be chosen as the representative to deliver a speech.

This is not the first time a recent graduate or engineer from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, born in Thanh Hoa province, has had this honor. However, this is a very impressive individual in terms of academic achievements, and Tan's speech was sincere, unpretentious, and also strong and resilient enough to touch many hearts.

Tan won second prize in the National Mathematics Competition in the 2019-2020 school year, and now he has achieved another milestone, graduating with honors in what is considered one of the most prestigious majors at an extremely prestigious university: Computer Science .

But we would admire him even more if we knew that Tan was born in the coastal region of Quang Xuong, where literacy is likened to anchoring itself on the crest of a wave – precarious and fragile. Tan's father was a factory worker, and his mother sold goods at the market. But overcoming all of that, they did everything they could to earn money to support their son through university.

In a place where education is still difficult, like Tan's hometown, graduating from high school is already a great achievement, let alone pursuing higher education. But from a young age, Tan chose to go to Thanh Hoa city to attend the province's specialized high school, accepting a life away from home to fulfill his dream of conquering mathematics. Then, in university, he spent long years in the capital with many expenses, determined to master algorithms and computer programming.

At a university like Hanoi University of Science and Technology, where thousands of students are forced to drop out, suspend their studies, or fail to graduate on time each year, Tan graduated with honors one semester ahead of schedule. That alone is a huge source of inspiration. Tan's determination is undeniable, but behind him is the extraordinary support of his parents.

Another touching story unfolded on the afternoon of May 10th at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology auditorium. Nguyen Tat Minh, a young man from Trieu Son, Thanh Hoa province, has a disability in his legs, yet he still cherishes his dream of conquering the university lecture halls. More than four years ago, Minh was admitted to the Computer Science program at the University of Science and Technology, and few believed he would graduate. In that field, at that university, even an able-bodied person would struggle to pass all the courses, let alone someone with health issues like Minh.

But above all, Minh still graduated, and even graduated with honors.

On the day Minh received his graduation certificate, his best friend Ngo Van Hieu – who had carried Minh to school for many years during high school – was present, even though he studied far from the capital, to once again carry his friend to the podium of honor.
