Distinguishing between the minimum admission score and the actual admission score was discussed in an online television counseling program titled "Choosing a major for the future: New information on admissions in 2024," organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of April 19th.

The program is streamed online at: thanhnien.vn , Facebook Fanpage, YouTube channel, and TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Director of the Admissions and Business Relations Center at the University of Finance and Marketing, said that this year the university has 6 admission methods. Currently, the university has just announced that it will accept applications for 5 early admission methods starting from April 22nd (excluding the method based on high school graduation exam scores), including the minimum admission score threshold.

Specifically, for the admission method based on the National University of Ho Chi Minh City's aptitude test scores, the university accepts applications from candidates with scores of 700/1200 or higher. For the third method, based on academic transcripts, the minimum score for application is 18. The university will announce the details regarding the admission methods based on V-SAT and high school graduation exam results in the near future.

However, Ms. Phung noted: "Candidates need to distinguish between the minimum admission score and the cut-off score. The minimum admission score is the lowest score required to submit an application. Based on the actual number of applicants, the admissions committee of each school determines the cut-off score for each major. There are cases where a school announces a cut-off score equal to the minimum admission score, but many majors at many schools have cut-off scores higher than the minimum admission score. Candidates need to monitor specific information from each school to avoid confusion between these two score thresholds."

According to Mr. Truong Quang Tri, Deputy Head of the Student Affairs Department at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, in previous years, the cut-off scores for the university's majors were usually equal to or 1-2 points higher than the minimum threshold. Some majors had a cut-off score of 18, while others had scores of 19-21. For health science majors in particular, candidates should pay attention to the minimum score threshold as stipulated by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Many new fields of study

This year, Nguyen Tat Thanh University is using four admission methods. These include admission based on high school graduation exam scores and direct admission, following the general regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Admission based on academic transcripts and scores from the aptitude tests of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City and the Vietnam National University Hanoi are early admission methods. This year, the university has five new majors.

Saigon International University also has several new majors and specializations: public relations, multimedia communication, educational technology, graphic design specialization, etc.

Among the 63 majors offered this year at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, there are 7 new majors. According to Mr. Vo Ngoc Nhon, these new majors were opened to meet the essential needs of digital transformation and digital technology; and to address the intersection between other fields and information technology.

Similarly, Mr. Vo Ngoc Nhon, Deputy Director of the Admissions Counseling Center at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, also stated that in the first round of admissions based on academic transcripts, the university announced the minimum admission scores (excluding the high school graduation requirement) for various majors ranging from 18-24 points. These include health science majors such as pharmacy, nursing, and medical laboratory technology. Currently, the university is accepting applications from candidates who participated in the National University of Ho Chi Minh City's aptitude test, with minimum scores ranging from 670-750 points depending on the major.

Mr. Tran Van Trang, Deputy Head of Admissions at Saigon International University, also stated that after the first round of applications ended on January 31st, the university announced the minimum admission scores (cut-off scores) for some majors, with some scores 1-1.5 points higher than the floor score. "This year, the university's cut-off scores will be higher than in previous years," Mr. Trang predicted.
