Uganda had to use three goalkeepers in their loss to Nigeria. |
Entering their match against Nigeria on December 30th in the AFCON 2025 group stage, Uganda needed a win to keep their hopes of advancing alive. However, from the very first minutes, the game quickly turned against Uganda as they were constantly under pressure from the fast-paced and physically strong attack of the "Super Eagles".
Uganda's difficulties arose when their number one goalkeeper, Denis Onyango, suffered a serious injury when the score was still 0-0. Despite the pain, Onyango tried to continue playing but was eventually forced to leave the field after halftime, making way for reserve goalkeeper Salim Jamal Magoola.
But things only got worse here, as Magoola lasted only 11 minutes on the pitch. In an attempt to stop Victor Osimhen, the goalkeeper handled the ball outside the penalty area and immediately received a direct red card. Uganda was plunged into crisis, forced to bring on their third goalkeeper, Nafian Alionzi, while trailing.

Magoola was disqualified from the competition. |
Disarray in the defense and playing with ten men led to Uganda's rapid collapse. Just three minutes after coming on, Alionzi had to pick the ball out of his net when Raphael Onyedik finished subtly, sending the ball between the goalkeeper's legs. The Club Brugge midfielder completed his brace just five minutes later, extending Nigeria's lead to 3-0.
Rogers Mato scored a goal to reduce the deficit for Uganda in the 75th minute, but that late effort was not enough to change the course of the match. Ultimately, Uganda lost and were officially eliminated from AFCON 2025 after only securing 1 point in Group C, extending their winless streak to 6 matches in the continent's most prestigious tournament.
