Recognizing that avocado trees adapt well to the specific soil conditions of the mountainous region, Mr. Cao Van Hau, residing in Ba Chuc commune, planted over 70 avocado trees interspersed in his family's durian orchard. To ensure market access and product quality, Mr. Hau chose the 034 avocado variety and the waxy avocado variety, both of which have high economic value. The model is implemented on an area of over 5,000 square meters in the Dai mountain region.

This year's harvest brings optimistic signs for Mr. Hau's family. This harvest yielded over 500kg of avocados from his family's orchard. Compared to durian trees, which require specific cultivation techniques and strict care procedures, Mr. Hau believes avocado trees are easier to grow.
According to Mr. Hau, during the flowering or fruiting stages, farmers only need to ensure adequate irrigation and regular fertilization at the right times. By adhering to these two basic factors, avocado trees can grow healthily and produce high-quality fruit. This year, Mr. Hau planted an additional 100 avocado trees of variety 034 on his family's hillside land.
The Cao Ngoc Nha family, residing in Ba Chuc commune, owns an orchard with over 50 avocado trees currently in their growth stage. According to Mr. Nha, intercropping helps create canopy cover, providing shade for the orchard. More importantly, this interwoven system of trees contributes to maintaining and retaining moisture, especially during the dry season.
Besides its ecological value, the model also brings economic value by creating an effective dual income stream. "From the money earned from selling avocados, I have additional funds to proactively purchase fertilizers and pesticides for my durian orchard, so I don't have to worry about investment capital," Mr. Nha shared.
According to Vo Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Ba Chuc Commune Farmers' Association, the model of intercropping avocados with durians and other fruit trees is a bright spot in the local crop transformation. Despite the difficulties in water resources and terrain conditions in the sloping Dai mountain area, the selection of high-value fruit trees combined with well-planned and rational intercropping demonstrates the outstanding effectiveness of the model. The Commune Farmers' Association proactively organizes many visits and experience-sharing sessions from these practical models, thereby encouraging and motivating members to apply this model to their production practices.
The model of intercropping avocados and durians practiced by many farmers in the Dai mountain area of Ba Chuc commune not only helps many families increase their income from the same cultivated area but also opens up a direction for many local farmers in transforming their crop structure, making the most of their land to develop sustainable hillside farming.
