South Korea 's hopes of advancing were officially dashed after the Democratic Republic of Congo's 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in the final match of Group K on the morning of June 28th. This result pushed the South Korean team out of the group of eight best third-placed teams and eliminated them from the 2026 World Cup after the group stage.
Previously, South Korea lost 0-1 to South Africa in the final match of Group A, finishing the group stage with 3 points. Despite the defeat, coach Hong Myung-bo's team still harbored hopes of securing a wildcard spot. However, as the remaining groups concluded, the door for the Asian representative closed even further.
On Starnews , fans not only vented their anger at coach Hong Myung-bo and the players but also expressed disappointment with the results from other Asian teams. Many fans felt that Japan , Australia, and Uzbekistan all failed to deliver favorable results that would have given South Korea any hope of advancing.
In Group F, Japan drew 1-1 with Sweden, securing both places in the knockout round as the Nordic team earned 4 points. In Group D, Australia also shared points with Paraguay in a goalless draw, allowing both teams to advance from the group stage.

Germany was criticized by Starnews for losing to Ecuador. |
South Korea's last hope rested on Uzbekistan. The Central Asian representatives even took the lead against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but ultimately lost 1-3. This result effectively ended South Korea's chances.
Furthermore, Germany's 1-2 defeat to Ecuador in Group E added to the bitterness for South Korean fans, as the South American team advanced to the next round. Starnews even used the phrase "ruthless Germany" to describe the result, which put South Korea at an even greater disadvantage.
The 2026 World Cup campaign thus ended in disappointment for South Korea. From a team expected to advance from a favorable group, they were eliminated after the group stage and saw their dreams of progressing further vanish due to a series of results in other groups.
