Old farmer competes for title of world's oldest person
Mr Abad, 124, is completing procedures to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest man, instead of the 111-year-old who was awarded the title last week.
The Peruvian government claims that Marcelino Abad Tolentino, a resident of the Huanuco region in central Peru, is 124 years old. If proven, he would become the oldest person alive and even top the list of oldest people ever verified by Guinness World Records.
Mr. Abad lives in a small village in the Andean mountains. He was given identification papers in 2019 and an old-age pension.
At his birthday celebration, he said the secret to his longevity was a diet rich in fruit and lamb. He also chewed coca leaves, a tradition among the Andean people of Peru. He now lives in a home for the elderly .
The Peruvian government says it is doing everything it can to help Tolentino get recognized by Guinness.
If proven, Mr Abad would dethrone the current record holder, John Alfred Tinniswood (pictured above) , 111, of the UK. The World War II veteran only took the title after the death of 114-year-old Juan Vicente Pérez on April 2.
The oldest living woman is 117 years old, while the oldest person ever verified is 122 years old.
The place with the cleanest air on the planet
The Southern Ocean has clean air with very few aerosols - tiny particles of matter that form naturally or as a result of human activity.
It is located far from human activity, but that is not the only reason why the air here is the cleanest in the world.
In a new study published in the journal Nature, a team of experts from Monash University and the University of Melbourne uncovered new information about cloud structure that shows how the Southern Ocean and its unique honeycomb-like clouds play a major role in regulating climate. They also discovered the key role that clouds and rain play in cleaning the air.
These honeycomb clouds can have a closed cell structure — the bright, white clouds that reflect sunlight back into space, cooling the Earth — or an open cell structure, allowing more sunlight to reach the Earth.
While aerosol concentrations in the air above the Southern Ocean are influenced by a number of factors, rainfall plays a key role. “Rainfall is key, especially from these open-cell honeycomb clouds. Rain washes aerosols out of the sky in the same way a washing machine cleans clothes,” the team writes.
