In a conversation with Jimmy Fallon on NBC's The Tonight Show on December 9, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted that ChatGPT has helped him manage his life as a real father.
“I can’t imagine going through the process of figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT. Obviously people have been doing it for a long time and have had no problems,” Altman shared.
The OpenAI CEO also added that he felt "a little bad" about having to ask a technology with such vast knowledge simple questions, such as: "Why did my kid stop throwing pizza on the floor and laugh?"
Another example Altman recounted was a few months ago, when he was at a party and chatting with someone who also had a baby. The OpenAI co-founder recalls the parent saying their 6-month-old was “crawling everywhere.”
Altman immediately became concerned that his son wasn't at the same stage of development. "I ran to the bathroom and said, 'Do I need to take him to the doctor tomorrow morning?'" the CEO said he typed into ChatGPT to ask.
Altman later described OpenAI's chatbot as responding "with a wonderful answer," reassuring that his son's development was "completely normal."
"It's personalized, like ChatGPT knows you. It knows I'm the CEO of OpenAI, I'm around high achievers, and I don't want you to push that on me, like you should relax, everything will be fine," Altman told Fallon of ChatGPT's response.
Altman and software engineer Oliver Mulherin married in January 2024 in a private ceremony. The couple lives in San Francisco and keeps their personal life private. In February 2025, Altman announced that her child had arrived earlier than expected.
"Welcome to the world , little boy!" Altman wrote, along with a photo of the baby's tiny hand holding an adult's finger.
