According to Reuters , a Samsung spokesperson said by phone that CEO Han Jong-hee died on March 25 due to cardiac arrest, at the age of 63.

Han Jong-hee heads the mobile device business (previously led by Koh Dong-jin) and consumer electronics (previously led by Hyun-Suk Kim). He also became co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, along with Jun Young-hyun, overseeing the chip business of South Korea's largest company.

Earlier, CEO Han Jong-hee appeared at the annual meeting held on March 19 in Suwon, South Korea, to acknowledge to shareholders that Samsung's technological competitiveness had weakened in recent years.

To salvage the situation, he pledged the company would pursue "meaningful achievements" in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals in 2025 as a way to restore growth.

"M&A in the semiconductor sector is facing difficulties due to regulations and national interests, but we are determined to achieve concrete results this year," said Han.

In that context, Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong sent an urgent message to thousands of the group's senior leaders.

He emphasized that Samsung is facing a life-or-death crisis, meaning it must either change to survive or accept defeat.

In the video, Chairman Lee emphasized: "Samsung is facing a life-or-death situation. We need to deeply reassess ourselves from the highest level. We must invest in the future, even if it means sacrificing short-term profits."
