Integrating festival activities to develop tourism in Chan May - Lang Co.

Abundant resources, but a lack of flagship products.

Compared to many other communes and wards, Chan May - Lang Co has many resources for tourism development. Besides Lang Co Bay, recognized as one of the world 's most beautiful bays, Chan May - Lang Co commune also boasts a system of beautiful streams and waterfalls such as Suoi Mo, Thac Do Stream, and Voi Stream… In addition, the beauty of Lap An Lagoon is becoming an attractive destination favored by tourists. The area also has Chan May Port, which regularly attracts cruise ships, bringing international tourists to experience the central provinces and cities of Vietnam.

Mr. Tran Van Minh Quan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chan May - Lang Co commune, said that in recent years, tourism and services in the commune have experienced significant growth, with an average increase of 16% per year in the number of visitors. In 2024 alone, the number of overnight visitors reached approximately 350,000. However, compared to the existing potential and advantages, the aforementioned development rate is still not commensurate.

Citing the lack of diverse tourism products and services, Ms. Duong Thi Cong Ly, Vice President and Head of the Product Committee of the Hue City Travel Association, stated that while the locality has beautiful beaches, the services are limited, mainly consisting of swimming and enjoying seafood; there is a lack of recreational activities. Services on the sea such as snorkeling, surfing, and paragliding are not yet well-developed.

On Lap An Lagoon, besides food services and photo opportunities, there are still not many experiences for tourists. Similarly, at the streams and waterfalls, there is a lack of experiential activities. Chan May - Lang Co is considered a destination with many places to eat but few places to have fun. This makes it difficult to retain tourists for extended stays. “The resorts are fine, but there is a lack of entertainment and recreational activities. The local authorities opened a pedestrian street at night along Lap An Lagoon, but we couldn't find it, and we heard it's been temporarily closed for several months. The lack of tourism products means we chose to go to Lang Co to eat seafood, but then went to Da Nang to have fun in the evening,” shared Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Mai, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City.

In fact, due to the limited range of products, even though international cruise ships dock at Chan May port, many international tourists have not chosen to visit the tourist destinations there. This is regrettable because cruise ship tourists have a high spending capacity if they have the opportunity to experience new things.

Mr. Quan expressed his concern that the biggest reason why the tourism potential has not been able to break through is the lack of investors. Despite possessing many natural advantages, the absence of significant investors means that the potential remains unawakened, making it difficult to develop new and attractive ideas and products. Furthermore, the professionalism of the destination and the linkages between travel agencies and service businesses are still fragmented, failing to create the strength needed to drive local tourism to a breakthrough.

Research, create breakthroughs.

Immediately after the two-tiered local government model came into operation, Chan May commune - Lang Co district established a field working group to assess the development of tourism and services; and at the same time, listen to the concerns and aspirations of businesses in the area. Local leaders also proactively connected with businesses to find new directions and products based on existing advantages.

Mr. Luu Duc Hoan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Council of the commune, affirmed: Continuing to identify tourism and services as a key economic sector, Chan May - Lang Co commune also makes the development of tourism and services one of the four key programs and one of the three breakthroughs of the locality in the 2025 - 2030 period.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Lap An commune, Tran Van Minh Quan, the locality has coordinated with businesses to survey and propose many ideas for exploiting Lap An lagoon, including building check-in points and relocating oyster stakes to develop tourism experiences on the lagoon. The locality also aims to develop the night economy associated with the Lang Co market area and the Nguyen Van pedestrian street along Lap An lagoon. In the future, nighttime services will be exploited here, while bringing local specialties closer to tourists. The commune will invite businesses and tourism establishments to discuss and find ways to promote and develop unique tourism products.

Ms. Huynh Thi Thuy Van, Director of 4LLIN Co., Ltd. Hue branch, said that the company has conducted surveys to develop product ideas and attract investment. The company will cooperate with the local authorities and the tourism industry to find investors and develop products to attract cruise ship passengers and create a stopover point to draw tourists from Da Nang and Hoi An to Chan May - Lang Co for a unique experience.

In the long term, Chan May - Lang Co commune will coordinate with the Department of Tourism and relevant units to improve service quality, develop distinctive tourism products with local identity, and integrate them with nature conservation. At the same time, it will call for investment in entertainment and recreational services; expand types of tourism such as beach tourism, community tourism, eco-tourism, and experiential tourism…

The call for investment is aligned with the local orientation of developing diverse, distinctive, and unique tourism and services, aiming for international standards with coastal and lagoon resorts; and investing in the effective exploitation of the beautiful Lang Co Bay. In addition, Chan May commune - Lang Co will strengthen cooperation with neighboring localities, including Da Nang, to form integrated tour routes.
