According to sources, OpenAI is expected to begin testing the display of ads on its ChatGPT chatbot starting February 10th. This move marks a significant shift in the artificial intelligence giant's business strategy.
A CNBC report indicates that the ads will be displayed in a separate area, below the user's chat window. OpenAI announced in January that these ads would be "clearly labeled" to distinguish them from the responses generated by ChatGPT.
A source close to the matter told CNBC that, in the long term, OpenAI expects advertising revenue to account for less than half of the company's total revenue. This suggests that advertising is not the sole source of income, but merely a part of OpenAI's revenue diversification strategy.
This AI giant's entry into the advertising market comes amid increasingly fierce competition. Last week, Anthropic, the company that developed the chatbot Claude, aired an ad during the Super Bowl mocking OpenAI, implying that "ads will come to AI chatbots." However, the official broadcast toned down the direct attack after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the campaign "dishonest."
According to the information released, ads on ChatGPT will appear to logged-in users, including those using the free version and the lower-cost Go plan. OpenAI claims it will “keep your ChatGPT conversations private from advertisers.” However, the company also notes that ads will still be “optimized based on what is most useful to you.”

OpenAI emphasizes that advertisers will not have the right to influence or affect the answers that ChatGPT provides to users. This is a point the company particularly highlighted amid growing concerns about the independence and reliability of AI systems.
In an internal memo accessed by CNBC , CEO Sam Altman said OpenAI plans to launch an updated conversational model this week. This information comes just days after the company released an enhanced version of its AI programming agent, Codex.
According to the memo, Altman also stated that ChatGPT “has returned to monthly growth exceeding 10%.” The last time OpenAI released user figures was in October 2025, when the platform recorded approximately 800 million weekly active users.
