According to AFP on February 3, the American technology giant OpenAI announced a new ChatGPT tool called "deep research" ahead of high-level meetings in Tokyo.
This tool emerges amidst the rise of China's DeepSeek chatbot, a formidable competitor in the AI market, causing a stir in Silicon Valley due to its high performance and low cost.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised DeepSeek as "a good model" showing the increasing competition in the AI field, although its capabilities "are not new."
Regarding ChatGPT's "in-depth research" tool, OpenAI claims that this new tool can "complete tasks in a few tens of minutes that would take humans hours."
"In-depth research is a new AI assistant from OpenAI capable of working independently. Users simply input their request, and ChatGPT will search, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to generate a detailed and comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst," the company stated.
During the online presentation, OpenAI researchers demonstrated how the tool aggregates search data to suggest which type of ski equipment users should buy for their winter vacation in Japan.
Mr. Altman is currently in Tokyo to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Masayoshi Son, chairman of the Japanese technology investment giant SoftBank Group.
SoftBank and OpenAI are both part of Project Stargate, a $500 billion initiative launched by US President Donald Trump to boost AI infrastructure in the United States.
Mr. Altman and Mr. Son will hold a forum on the afternoon of February 3 (local time) with approximately 500 businesses in Tokyo to announce Japan's AI infrastructure development plan.
According to Nikkei, the plan may include building AI data centers and power plants to supply them, although the scale of the investment is unclear.
Additionally, Altman revealed that he is collaborating with former Apple design director Jony Ive to develop "a new kind of hardware" that integrates AI. However, he stated that it will take several more years before a prototype of this product can be introduced.
