Sergio Ramos officially says goodbye to Rayados de Monterrey. |
After losing to Toluca in the Apertura 2025 semi-finals, the Spanish midfielder confirmed that this was his last match for the Mexican team.
Ramos joined Monterrey in early 2025, quickly becoming the team’s captain and a mainstay in the defense. However, he failed to win any of the five tournaments the team participated in, including the Concacaf Champions Cup, Club World Cup and Leagues Cup. His best achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the 2025 Apertura.
“I made it clear last week. This is my last game,” Ramos told TUDN. The decision not to renew makes him the first player to leave Rayados ahead of the new season, freeing up a foreign player slot for the team.
Ramos' next destination at the age of 39 is still a question mark. However, he has not thought about hanging up his boots. Ramos aims to compete for a place in the 2026 World Cup with Spain, so he is likely to return to Europe in the next half year. AC Milan and Real Madrid are rumored as two potential destinations, but no specific contact has been confirmed.
Monterrey's board said they had not received any early notification from Ramos, but respected his choice. With a foreign player slot just vacant, the team will assess their squad needs before making a decision for next season.
