Sergio Ramos officially bids farewell to Rayados de Monterrey. |
Following their defeat to Toluca in the semi-finals of the Apertura 2025, the Spanish central defender confirmed that this was his last match for the Mexican team.
Ramos joined Monterrey in early 2025, quickly becoming captain and a cornerstone of the defense. However, he failed to win any titles in the five competitions the team participated in, including the Concacaf Champions Cup, Club World Cup, and Leagues Cup. Their best achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the Apertura 2025.
“I made it clear last week. This is my last game,” Ramos shared with TUDN. His decision not to renew his contract makes him the first player to leave Rayados before the new season, and also frees up a foreign player slot for the team.
Ramos's next destination at age 39 remains a question mark. However, he hasn't thought about retiring yet. Ramos aims to qualify for the 2026 World Cup with the Spanish national team, so it's likely he will return to Europe within the next six months. AC Milan and Real Madrid are rumored to be two potential destinations, but no concrete contact has been confirmed.
Monterrey's management stated that they had not received any prior notification from Ramos, but respected his decision. With one foreign player slot now vacant, the team will assess their squad needs before making a decision for the next season.
