NDO - According to the Ministry of Health, the measles vaccination campaign has been strongly implemented with positive results. The first phase of the campaign vaccinated 95.5% of the target group, and the second phase (as of April 7, 2025) has vaccinated 96% of the target group.

During week 15 (April 5th to April 11th, 2025), the country recorded 4,519 suspected measles cases, a decrease of 6.3% compared to the previous week (4,822 cases). However, since the beginning of 2025, the country has recorded 67,904 suspected measles cases, of which 7,235 have tested positive.

The number of cases tended to increase from week 9, leveled off in week 14, and decreased in week 15. Regarding the local situation, some provinces and cities recorded a decrease in the number of cases, such as Nghe An, Hue City, Hanoi , Da Nang City, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Thap.

Conversely, Gia Lai , Lai Chau, and Lao Cai provinces have seen an increase in measles cases, primarily among ethnic minorities. Alarmingly, eight measles-related deaths have been recorded. Compared to the first three months of 2025, the age distribution of cases has changed: the 1-10 year old group has decreased, while the under-1 year old and over-10 year old groups have increased. Analysis of vaccination status shows the highest measles incidence rate is among the unvaccinated group (82.8%).

In response to this situation, the health sector has implemented many decisive measures. The Ministry of Health has closely monitored the epidemic situation nationwide, especially in provinces and cities with high numbers of cases, and has directed health facilities to strengthen medical examination and treatment and infection control.

According to the Ministry of Health, the first phase of the campaign has vaccinated 95.5% of the target group, and the second phase (as of April 7, 2025) has vaccinated 96% of the target group.

In addition, the Ministry of Health also focuses on information and coordination, working with the National Center for Health Information to improve the quality of infectious disease reporting, and coordinating with media agencies to disseminate information about the epidemic situation and prevention and control measures.

Although the pandemic situation shows signs of improvement, the health sector still recognizes many challenges. Some localities have not achieved high vaccination rates (≥95%) due to difficulties in reaching target groups, especially in remote areas and large urban centers. Awareness among some segments of the population remains limited, leading to reluctance to get vaccinated. Furthermore, the shortage of grassroots healthcare workers hinders implementation efforts.

To respond effectively, the Ministry of Health recommends that provincial and city health departments strengthen communication about the epidemic situation and disease prevention recommendations. The Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology and the Pasteur Institute are requested to closely monitor the situation and research epidemic prevention and control measures. Healthcare facilities need to effectively implement patient triage, admission, treatment, and infection control.

Finally, healthcare facilities must ensure that all cases are reported fully and promptly as required. The Ministry of Health hopes to receive the attention and cooperation of the press and the community in the fight against measles.
