On the morning of June 19th, the Tuyen Quang Provincial Police announced that the Ngoc Duong Commune Police had successfully thwarted an online fraud attempt, preventing a citizen from losing 136.8 million VND.
The person who narrowly escaped becoming a victim was Mr. LVT, a freelance worker residing in the area.
According to the police, Mr. T. had previously received a call offering him a high-paying job transporting goods. After gaining his trust, the perpetrators befriended him on Zalo, sent him a contract, and hired him to transport machinery from the former Ha Giang city to Dong Van commune for a fee of 5 million VND.
Next, the group suggested that Mr. T. contact a mechanical engineering company to order a batch of iron beds, and instructed him to inflate the selling price to pocket the difference. Believing this to be a profitable business opportunity, Mr. T. continued to discuss the matter with the individuals involved.
Subsequently, the perpetrators sent invoices, QR codes, and requested him to transfer 136.8 million VND as a deposit to complete the export procedures.
Not stopping there, they also informed him that his money was being "held by the tax office" because the related business was under investigation for tax evasion, and demanded additional money to "release the shipment," promising to return the full amount within minutes.
Noticing several unusual signs, Mr. T. went to the Ngoc Duong Commune Police Station to report the matter.
Immediately after receiving the information, police officers checked the content of calls, messages, electronic invoices, and QR codes that the perpetrators sent to the victim.
Upon verification, the Ngoc Duong Commune Police determined this to be a new scam tactic. The perpetrators impersonated customers hiring transportation services and set up a "goods supply company" to trick victims into transferring deposit money in order to steal their assets.
Thanks to timely advice and warnings, Mr. T. stopped all transactions and avoided losing 136.8 million VND.
