Give without expecting anything in return.

On a midday in late 2025, while attendees of the livelihood support event for people with disabilities, organized by the Center for Research and Development of People with Disabilities' Capabilities under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations in Long Thanh commune, Dong Nai province, were resting and having lunch, Mr. Nguyen Van Thinh, Chairman of the Long Thanh Club for People with Disabilities, was busy completing the remaining tasks to prepare for the afternoon's handover of a house to a club member's family. The house was built with funds and materials that Mr. Thinh had personally raised and organized.

Those who "build houses and establish righteousness"

Over the past period, Mr. Thinh has dedicated much time and effort to building a temporary house for the family of Mr. Tran The Cao (residing in Hamlet 9, Long Thanh Commune), one of the members of the Long Thanh Club for People with Disabilities who is facing difficult circumstances. Mr. Cao unfortunately suffered a work accident, resulting in a fractured spine and weakened health, rendering him unable to walk and completely dependent on his wife and others for daily life. Witnessing Mr. Cao's family living in such precarious conditions, Mr. Thinh decided to help by mobilizing resources to build a temporary house, providing the family with a safer place to live.

Mr. Thinh said: "I've been a construction contractor for over 25 years, so I have many connections in the industry. Recently, when the highway project required land clearance and demolition of many people's houses, I went to ask for intact corrugated iron sheets to use for walls, asked for rubble to fill the foundation, and used usable items to build a kitchen to help Mr. Cao's family reduce costs. I also went to various construction material suppliers to solicit support in many ways, such as asking for a few bags of cement, a few cubic meters of sand, or selling rafters at a lower price than the market rate."

"I approach anyone who can help raise funds immediately. Because I'm asking for help for those in need, not for myself. Luckily, when I raise the issue, people support me, whether a little or a lot, which gives me more motivation," Thinh shared.

Over the past period, in his role as the Chairman of the Long Thanh Club for People with Disabilities, Mr. Thinh has maintained close contact with the Commune's Department of Culture and Social Affairs in implementing policies related to people with disabilities in the area, making many contributions to helping the local community. Currently, we are continuing to update and review the list of people with disabilities in the area, and based on that, we will advise on the implementation of timely and appropriate policies to help people with disabilities have the opportunity to improve their lives. In particular, the department will continue to promote the role of the Club for People with Disabilities to become increasingly effective.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cu, Deputy Director of the Center for Research and Development of Disability Capacity in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, said: “I personally visited Mr. Cao's family and witnessed Mr. Thinh's actions, which deeply moved me. We organized a fundraising campaign and, together with Mr. Thinh, supported Mr. Cao. We thought that if Mr. Thinh alone could do such a thing, why shouldn't we all join hands to support this noble act? And in just a few days of implementation, we raised 67 million VND.”

With a total budget of 162 million VND, including donations from benefactors and savings from Mr. Cao's family, Mr. Thinh organized the construction in 35 days. Those directly involved in building Mr. Cao's house also provided support in their own ways. Some contributed 5-10 days of labor or reduced their labor costs.

Rekindling hope for the visually impaired.

For over 17 years as the head of the Long Thanh Club for People with Disabilities, Mr. Thinh has always cared about those in difficult circumstances. Depending on his abilities, he provides support in appropriate ways. After completing the house for Mr. Cao, Mr. Thinh continued to help the family of Mr. Do Van Binh (residing in Van Hai hamlet, Long Thanh commune) repair their facilities, giving Mr. Binh better conditions to practice acupressure, massage, and physical therapy. Mr. Binh is visually impaired, his wife has a mobility disability, and their family is facing financial difficulties. Based on funding provided by the Center for Research and Development of People with Disabilities, Mr. Thinh directly oversaw the upgrading of the room's floor and painting of the walls to fix the leaky roof, ensuring safety and cleanliness. In addition, he also redid the advertising sign outside the gate for easier visibility.

Mr. Binh said: “Because I am visually impaired in both eyes, for many years, the profession of acupressure, massage, and physical therapy has suited my health condition, allowing me to support my family. Clients at the facility are mostly elderly people with bone and joint pain, patients recovering from illness, and especially those injured in traffic accidents who need physical therapy support. When I received financial assistance for repairs, I asked Mr. Thinh for help, because from the very beginning when I decided to pursue this profession, Mr. Thinh has supported me in many ways until now.”

As for Mr. Thinh, when asked about his meaningful work, he confided: "I think I should help whoever I can, giving without expecting anything in return. I only hope that the lives of people with disabilities will be as less difficult as possible, because people with disabilities are at a great disadvantage."
