Kim Bong carpentry village was established around the 16th century, developing and becoming famous for its traditional carpentry craft, located only about 2km from Hoi An Ancient Town.
To this day, the Kim Bong carpentry craft is still preserved and passed down with hundreds of artisans and skilled craftsmen in four main fields: construction carpentry, household carpentry, boat building carpentry, and fine art carpentry. This craft village was inscribed on the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2016.
This is one of the earliest established tourist attractions and a popular destination for visitors, especially international tourists, in the early 21st century. However, over time, the Kim Bong carpentry village has become saturated, with fewer visitors, and for a long time, it fell into a state of stagnation.
The Kim Bong carpentry village has begun to experience positive changes thanks to several catalysts. These include the city's Resolution 33, outlining the project "Building an ecological rural village and craft village in Cam Kim, giai đoạn 2017 - 2020, with a vision to 2025"; its selection as a pilot model under the Rural Tourism Development Program in the New Rural Development Program, giai đoạn 2021 - 2025; and funding from the Project to develop sustainable community livelihood models combined with ecotourism to promote socio -economic development and contribute to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve.
Hoi An's inclusion in UNESCO's global network of creative cities in the field of crafts and folk arts in 2023… has reactivated the energy of Kim Bong carpentry village.
The official launch of guided tours on June 1st will help fully convey the brand identity of Kim Bong carpentry village to tourists, alongside other craft villages that have already organized guided tours such as Tra Que vegetable village and Thanh Ha pottery village.
Mr. Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An City, said that there will still be many difficulties and challenges in managing and operating, as well as organizing sightseeing, experiential activities, tourism , services, and sharing benefits for the local community…
However, for now, this will be a new beginning with much hope for a brighter future for the craft village and the locality, thereby catching up with the trend of sustainable tourism development in the new era.
Over the past period, Kim Bong carpentry village has been upgraded and renovated in terms of infrastructure and landscape to ensure it serves guided tours, develops programs and routes, as well as conducts research, collects and displays artifacts, and restores values that are gradually disappearing.
According to the People's Committee of Cam Kim commune, in the coming time, they will continue to gradually complete the "check-in" area for tourists, the exhibition house, the environmental landscape, and the participation of handicraft establishments...
Ms. Truong Thi Ngoc Cam, Director of the Culture, Sports and Information Center of Hoi An City, said that the launch of guided tours at Kim Bong carpentry village is only in phase 1.
In phase 2 (expected from mid-2025), research will be conducted to propose the organization of additional integrated tour programs. This includes tours combining visits to historical and cultural sites, experiences with local crafts, and experiences in ecotourism, clean agriculture , and fisheries; and organizing integrated tour programs within Hoi An and neighboring localities…
