(NLĐO) – Credit card holders assert they did not make any transactions or payments, yet their bank accounts were repeatedly debited, resulting in the loss of tens of millions of dong.
In a report to the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper, Mr. NHT (residing in Ho Chi Minh City), a credit card holder of a commercial bank, stated that his international debit card account continuously displayed "Outgoing money" notifications for online transactions on the night of January 31st and the early morning of February 1st, 2025.
Because each transaction involved a small amount (25,275 VND), and he hadn't registered for SMS Banking, he didn't receive any transaction notifications. Specifically, these transactions occurred between approximately 10:55 PM on January 31st and 4:55 AM on February 1st (the 3rd and 4th days of Tet), so he was unaware of them.
"On the morning of February 1st, when I checked my digital banking app, I discovered that there were 1,160 transactions in my account, totaling nearly 29 million VND. These transactions were for payments to Google Red River. I assert that I did not make these transactions and have reported it to the bank's hotline to have my card blocked. The bank responded that they are investigating," Mr. T. recounted.
Similarly, another credit card holder, Ms. TTTH (residing in Ho Chi Minh City), also stated that she did not make any transactions, but on January 31st (the 3rd day of Tet), her card account recorded 5 foreign currency transactions abroad, each for the same amount of 179.8 USD. In total, the 5 transactions deducted nearly 900 USD (equivalent to nearly 23 million VND) from Ms. H.'s account.
Mr. T. had money deducted from his account in a total of 1,160 transactions, resulting in a loss of nearly 29 million VND.
Immediately after the incident occurred, Ms. H. called the hotline to report the card being blocked and waited for the issuing bank to investigate the transaction. She asserted that she did not make these transactions.
"These transactions were made unusually early in the morning, with the same amount of money, in quick succession."
"I haven't received any information or OTP codes to confirm these transactions. I haven't given my card to anyone, and I rarely use my phone for online shopping, let alone for transactions using foreign currency," Ms. H. wondered.
Reporters from Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper have contacted the banks that issued the credit cards to these customers and are awaiting an official response.
Banks advise cardholders to absolutely keep their card information secure during transactions, especially the 3-digit CVV code on the back of the card, to avoid unnecessary financial losses.
Regarding the sudden deduction of funds from credit cards due to transactions occurring in the early morning or late at night, some financial experts believe that it is highly likely that customers' credit card information has been compromised due to various reasons.
In case of suspected breach of card or bank account information, users should take immediate temporary measures to protect their accounts and personal information. Specifically, users must immediately notify the card issuer to have the card blocked; this can be done through the digital banking application; via the bank's hotline; or at a bank branch or transaction office.
