According to our observations, despite light rain in Hoi An over the past few days, thousands of tourists from countries such as India, South Korea, and Malaysia still visit the Japanese Bridge every day.
Upon entering the Bridge Pagoda, visitors are introduced to the origins and age of the structure by staff and tour guides at the ticket counter. Visitors seem delighted to see the wooden pillars, horizontal plaques, and couplets firsthand, and to hear the guides explain the Bridge Pagoda before and after its restoration.
Robbie, from Scotland, said he really enjoyed visiting Vietnam because of its many beautiful sights, especially the unique and nostalgic Japanese Bridge in Hoi An. “I learned that the Japanese Bridge reflects the cultural exchange between Vietnam, Japan, and China. After its restoration, this architectural masterpiece is quite beautiful. I will visit Vietnam whenever I have the chance and introduce the Japanese Bridge to my friends after this trip,” Robbie shared.
The new look of the Japanese Bridge not only attracts international tourists, but also many young people from various provinces and cities in Vietnam who come here to learn about the culture, enjoy the cuisine , and take photos next to this unique architectural masterpiece in Hoi An. Ms. Dang Thi My Anh, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “I visited the Japanese Bridge before, and now that I've returned, I see that the structure, after restoration, still retains its ancient charm.”
Reportedly, after nearly two years of restoration, the Japanese Bridge has become more beautiful and retains its original structure, from the tiled roof to the artifacts inside. The site reopened to tourists on August 3, 2024. This was the largest restoration project to date, with a total budget of 20.2 billion VND, funded by the provincial and Hoi An city budgets.
The Japanese Bridge, built in the early 17th century, boasts a unique architecture and is considered a symbol and the soul of the heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Dong, Deputy Director of the Hoi An City Center for Culture, Sports, and Information, approximately 6,000 visitors come to visit the Japanese Bridge and other architectural works in Hoi An every day. With Christmas and New Year approaching, it is expected that the number of domestic and international tourists visiting the Japanese Bridge and other architectural works in Hoi An will also increase.
