Apple continues to see a wave of AI talent leave as Jian Zhang, a leading artificial intelligence researcher in the field of robotics, joins Meta Platforms.
Meta confirmed that Zhang joined the Robotics Studio, a division of Reality Labs that focuses on developing robotics and AI systems. He previously led a research team at Apple that focused on automation and the role of AI in robotics. However, the team has had several staff changes, including Mario Srouji leaving for Archer Aviation in April.
In parallel, three other Apple AI researchers have also left the Foundation Models team, a key unit in building the Apple Intelligence platform. These people include John Peebles, Nan Du and Zhao Meng. According to some sources, Peebles and Du will move to OpenAI, while Zhao will join Anthropic.
Foundation Models has lost about 10 employees, including its team leader, in recent weeks. Previously, Ruoming Pang, the head of Apple's AI modeling team, left after signing a long-term contract worth $200 million . Bloomberg reported that Apple is considering investing more in outside AI technology, rather than developing it entirely in-house.
While the iPhone maker faces a brain drain, Meta has emerged as an attractive destination thanks to its high-paying policies. The company has invested heavily in smart glasses and AI features, but has also researched operating systems and hardware for humanoid robots.
Apple has also made robotics part of its long-term strategy, with plans to develop devices like desktop computers with moving screens and robotic arms for retail and manufacturing applications. The robotics division has now been moved into hardware engineering, separate from the AI and machine learning group.
But internal Apple sentiment suggests the company is facing challenges, with some employees saying the lackluster response to Apple Intelligence, along with the company’s potential move to a third-party model, has dampened morale.
Apple shares fell 1.5% in premarket trading on September 2, to $228.77 , in response to the negative news. Representatives from Apple and OpenAI declined to comment, while Anthropic did not respond.
