Apple continues to witness a wave of AI talent departures as Jian Zhang, a leading artificial intelligence researcher in the field of robotics, joins Meta Platforms.

Meta confirmed that Zhang has joined Robotics Studio, a division of Reality Labs focused on developing robotics technology and AI systems. He previously led a research team at Apple focusing on automation and the role of AI in robotics. However, this team has experienced significant personnel changes, including Mario Srouji's departure to Archer Aviation in April.

Meanwhile, three more Apple AI researchers also left the Foundation Models team, a key unit in building the Apple Intelligence platform. These individuals are John Peebles, Nan Du, and Zhao Meng. According to some sources, Peebles and Du will move to OpenAI, while Zhao will join Anthropic.

Foundation Models has lost around 10 employees, including its team leader, in just the past few weeks. Previously, Ruoming Pang, Apple's AI modeling team leader, left after signing a long-term contract worth $200 million . Bloomberg reports that Apple is considering investing more in external AI technology, rather than developing it entirely in-house.
