Prior to round 9, coach Choi Won-kwon's team had never won at home this season. Thanh Hoa had suffered 3 defeats and 4 draws after 8 rounds. Thanh Hoa's poor form led to them being considered the underdog against The Cong Viettel, despite having home advantage in round 9.

The encounter between the two teams became even more special as Coach Popov, in his capacity as the new coach of The Cong Viettel, faced his former team. The home team's defeat stemmed from the single goal scored by Dinh Viet Tu - the 33-year-old defender who played for Thanh Hoa FC last season and recently joined The Cong Viettel for the 2025-2026 season.

Coach Popov led The Cong Viettel to victory against his former team.
With 3 points earned in round 9, Coach Popov's team returned to 3rd place in the standings, 3 points behind the leader. Meanwhile, Thanh Hoa dropped to second-to-last place with only 7 points, the same number of points as Hoang Anh Gia Lai but ranked higher due to a better goal difference. However, Coach Choi Won-kwon's team has played one more match than the team from the mountainous region.
