Apple has just announced a senior management change, with Tim Cook assuming the role of Executive Chairman of the Board, while John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has been appointed to a new position, effective September 1st.
According to Apple, this decision was approved by the board of directors and is the result of a long and careful succession planning process. As executive chairman, Tim Cook will continue to support the company's strategic operations, including working with policymakers globally.
Commenting on his successor, Cook said: "John Ternus has the mindset of an engineer, the spirit of an innovator, and the heart of an upright leader. He is the perfect person to lead Apple into the future."

John Ternus joined Apple's product design team in 2001, became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and was appointed to the executive board in 2021. Over more than two decades, he has overseen the hardware engineering of many flagship product lines such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods.
Recently, his team made its mark with the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max generations, along with the ultra-slim iPhone Air. Under Ternus's leadership, AirPods continue to hold their position in the premium in-ear headphone category, notable for their active noise cancellation technology.
Additionally, Ternus also promoted innovations in materials and design to reduce carbon emissions, such as developing recycled aluminum alloys, applying 3D-printed titanium to the Apple Watch Ultra 3, and improving repairability to extend product lifespan.
Prior to joining Apple, Ternus was a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
In related developments, Arthur Levinson – Apple's non-executive chairman for the past 15 years – will move into the role of chief independent director effective September 1st. Ternus will also join the board of directors at the same time.
Tim Cook joined Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011. Under his leadership, Apple has launched many new products and services such as Apple Vision Pro, and expanded its ecosystem with services like iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV, and Apple Music.
In terms of scale, Apple has grown dramatically, with its market capitalization increasing from approximately $350 billion in 2011 to $4 trillion today, equivalent to an increase of over 1,000%. Annual revenue has also nearly quadrupled, from $108 billion in fiscal year 2011 to over $416 billion in fiscal year 2025.
