MU and Tottenham fans have to spend huge amounts of money to watch the Europa League final this season. |
The final on May 21 in Bilbao, Spain, is likely to be an English civil war. In the first leg of the semi-finals, MU won 3-0 against Athletic Club and almost had one foot in the final. Meanwhile, Tottenham also beat Bodo/Glimt 3-1 and have a great chance of going on.
Fans of the two Premier League teams are already planning their trips to the Basque Country, but the prospect of securing flights and hotels is putting many off.
With less than three weeks to go until the match, most hotels in central Bilbao are either fully booked or costing more than £1,000 a night. All direct flights from London and Manchester to Bilbao during the week of the final are sold out.
The cheapest option at the moment is to fly via Milan, departing the day before and returning after the game, but that will cost you at least £350. Some fans are considering flying to Madrid and then travelling by train or bus, or even driving the long way across Spain after landing in other cities.
On social media, many fans lamented the huge cost of the trip. One wrote: "I just checked hotel prices in Bilbao. Are there any campsites nearby?" Another sarcastically said: "Good luck if you're planning on booking a hotel in Bilbao."
Another said: "Caught between really wanting to go to Bilbao for the final and my bank account refusing to fly." Another fan summed up the general mood: "The prices for flights and hotels for the Europa League final in Bilbao are insane."
