The player registration nightmare continues to plague Barca.

The nightmare of "player registration" continues to plague Barcelona.

ZNewsZNews11/08/2025

Rashford has not yet been registered by Barca to play in La Liga.

Entering the 2025/26 season, even high-profile new signing Marcus Rashford is not guaranteed to be fit for the opening La Liga match against Mallorca this weekend. President Joan Laporta, in an interview with TV3 on Sunday, admitted he could not guarantee Rashford's participation. Conversely, goalkeeper Joan Garcia is more likely to be included thanks to La Liga's approval due to Ter Stegen's long-term absence.

However, the registration of new signings and players who recently extended their contracts, such as Rashford, Bardghji, Szczesny, Gerard Martin, etc., remains stalled because Barca has not yet met the 1:1 rule requirement - a problem that has plagued the club for four years.

Since the 2021/22 season, the Catalan team has consistently found itself in a situation where they only act at the last minute. At that time, Sergio Agüero was only registered on the last day of the transfer window, thanks to Busquets and Alba taking pay cuts; before that, Pique did the same to ensure Depay, Eric Garcia, and Rey Manaj were eligible to play.

The following season was a year of " economic leverage," bringing in Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Kounde, but it took last-minute guarantees to complete the paperwork for the French center-back.

In the 2023/24 season, Barca continued to have to register players in small numbers, including Gündogan, Oriol Romeu, Marcos Alonso, and Iñigo, while also "re-registering" Araujo, Sergi Roberto, Abde, and Gavi - Gavi's case even led to a commercial court case.

Dani Olmo also ran into trouble with registration for competitions.

Last season, Dani Olmo was the center of attention. Despite spending over 50 million euros to sign him from Leipzig, Barca still left Olmo out of the first two La Liga rounds and only managed to bring him back thanks to Christensen's long-term injury.

But that wasn't all; on New Year's Eve, La Liga unexpectedly announced the cancellation of Olmo and Pau Víctor's registrations, before the CSD intervened to save both players. The joy of the return of the 1:1 rule quickly faded when Barca had to exclude the €100 million from the VIP box from their financial reports.

With the new season upon us, the "survival of the fittest" is back. Besides Joan Garcia, the Catalan team still has a mountain of work to do with Rashford, Bardghji, Szczesny, Fort, Marc Bernal, and Gerard Martín. Although they could temporarily avoid this by registering Bardghji and Bernal with the B team, Barca still faces a nail-biting race against time – a scenario all too familiar at Camp Nou over the past half-decade.
