The short film "There's a Constellation" was screened at the S-Express Vietnam program in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of May 9th. The approximately 17-minute film, in a narrative style, depicts the life of Cong Ly through the perspective of Thuc Anh, from childhood to adulthood.
When Thuc Anh was one year old, her parents separated. She lived with her mother and only saw her father on television. As a child, she used to think Cong Ly was in prison because she had seen the actor wearing a prisoner's uniform in movies a few times. Each time she saw that scene, Thuc Anh would burst into tears, thinking her father had been arrested.
Thục Anh's childhood was closely associated with pubs and gatherings of her father, his friends, and colleagues. Sometimes, she accompanied artists to rehearsals at the Hanoi Drama Theatre or to television shoots. Later, witnessing Công Lý's new happiness or the times her father couldn't pick her up from school because he was busy with work, she felt neglected. The director once resented her father, believing the artist had abandoned her and her mother.
As she grew older, Thuc Anh understood that her father was strict and reserved, but always loving towards his family and children. According to Thuc Anh, Cong Ly didn't interfere with her studies because he wanted her to be proactive and creative. Knowing that his daughter was pursuing a career as a director, he supported her but still warned her that it would be hard work. When Thuc Anh gave him a hat or a sweater, the artist didn't show his emotions outwardly but always cherished and used them frequently.
In the film, the director reflects on the most unfortunate period in his life and that of his family: when Cong Ly suffered a stroke. The artist was hospitalized during the Covid-19 pandemic, and his family couldn't visit him for a long time. This event made Thuc Anh realize how much she loved her father. She said: "I realized I loved my father more than I thought and how afraid I was of losing him. I longed to hear his voice on stage, to hear him scold me, to see him on TV, to sit with him in a pub like when I was a child."
On the first day she reunited with her father after his serious illness, Thuc Anh realized that for so long, artists have always been pushing themselves, portraying themselves as the pillar of the family. Although Cong Ly didn't say it out loud, the director sensed in her father a fear of being forgotten. Thuc Anh wrote a letter to her father, which included the passage: "The audience misses you very much, and you are such a talented artist. Please don't give up everything because of this incident. The audience needs you, and we need you too." This letter prompted Cong Ly to accept the offer to return to the screen after a year of illness.
Thục Anh had the idea to make a film about her father when she was 18, but only started in her final year of university. She spent four months on it, including scriptwriting and post-production. When it was finished, Thục Anh showed it to her father and Tít – the son of Công Lý and MC Thảo Vân. The director said that after watching it, her father just laughed, while Tít clearly showed his emotion.
Nguyen Cong Thuc Anh, 23 years old, graduated from the Hanoi University of Theatre and Film with a major in Film Directing. Her graduation film, "A Constellation," participated in the 2023 Golden Kite Awards. Currently, Thuc Anh works as a production assistant and film crew secretary for VFC.
Cong Ly, 51, born in Hanoi, holds the position of deputy director of the Hanoi Drama Theatre. Besides his stage work, he has participated in many television dramas such as "Gió làng Kình," "Bão qua làng," "Chuyện ngang qua phố cũ," "Những cô gái trong thành phố," and "Hướng dương ngược nắng." In 2019, he was awarded the title of People's Artist.
In July 2021, the actor fell at his home and had to undergo lengthy treatment at the Central Military Hospital 108. Since then, he has performed and acted less, focusing on his recovery. As he gradually recovered, the artist reappeared with several small roles that attracted attention in films such as "Ex-Husband, Ex-Wife, Ex-Lover" and "Our Family Suddenly Has Fun ".
