Trend craze

The incessant clicking of cameras, catchy music blaring from phone speakers, and bursts of laughter… all blend together as young people pose, film clips, and take photos following the trending social media phenomenon. From trendy cafes and brightly lit squares to lush green tea hills, the vibrant energy of digital life permeates everywhere, where trends are embraced, adapted, and spread.

In the age of booming social media, thousands of new pieces of content appear and spread at breakneck speed every day. TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts have become the "universe" of trends.

Each trend may only last a few days, but it's enough to create a wave that captivates young people. Just a few minutes scrolling through TikTok, and users can easily come across a series of videos reviewing new treats: salted egg croissants, slipper-shaped bread, or cream cheese bubble tea.

These trends quickly spread to Thai Nguyen as well. At many times, it was easy to spot young people lining up in front of restaurants. Not only food, but also trends in fashion , travel, lifestyle, etc., were updated and applied instantly.

Nguyen Thuy Lam, a second-year student at the University of Agriculture and Forestry ( Thai Nguyen University), said: "Following trends helps me feel like I'm not falling behind and gives me a lot of interesting content to share with my friends. But I only choose trends that are appropriate, not too expensive, or offensive."

For some young people, following trends is also a business opportunity. Tran Minh Dat, the owner of a bubble tea shop in Thai Nguyen City, shared: "Whenever there's a 'hot' item online, I try to add it to the menu as soon as possible. In reality, it brings unexpected results. Whenever there's a trend, the number of customers at the shop usually doubles, or even triples, especially students."

Not only local images, but the trend of taking photos in ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress), holding the S-shaped map, and waving the red flag with a yellow star at various locations in the city such as Vo Nguyen Giap Square, the Museum of Vietnamese Ethnic Cultures, or checking in at the tea hills of Tan Cuong, La Bang, and Hoang Nong has attracted young people.

Many groups have also created videos of group dances and songs in traditional costumes or the colors of the national flag, creating a lively atmosphere and a sense of pride in their homeland. When asked about this trend, many opinions affirm that following trends is not bad, and is even a skill for quick adaptation in the digital society. However, young people need a "filter" to choose positive, creative, and safe trends while preserving local cultural identity.

According to media researchers, the spread of trends largely stems from social media algorithms constantly pushing trending content to users, creating the feeling that everyone is doing it. In addition, the content creation community in Vietnam is very dynamic: from just one original idea, hundreds of variations will appear, extending the lifespan of a trend.

However, many young people admit that they sometimes feel pressured to participate in order not to fall behind. From another perspective, properly leveraging trends can become a "catalyst" for new ideas, supporting the development of marketing, tourism, cuisine, and more.

In Thai Nguyen, along with many uniquely styled food and beverage establishments, many tourist attractions such as Ghenh Che Lake, Hoang Nong tea hill, and cafes with views of the rice fields (Linh Son ward)... have also become "trendsetters" online, attracting a surge in young tourists.

In the global "party" of social media, following trends is a quick way to integrate into the community. But its true value doesn't lie in the number of views or likes, but in how each person chooses to participate. Smart, creative, and selective trend-following will help young people not miss out on the fun while maintaining their individuality and safety.
