Joao Mendes has left Burnley to join Hull City. |
Mendes, 20, will join Hull City's academy to continue pursuing his dream of playing professionally and shining in top European leagues.
Before joining Hull City, Mendes spent a year training and playing at Burnley. There, Ronaldinho's son made five appearances in the Premier League Cup, contributing one goal and two assists. However, that wasn't enough for Mendes to play for Burnley's first team.
This left-back began his career at the Cruzeiro academy, playing for several domestic youth academies such as Flamengo, Vasco de Gama, and Boavista. He then joined Barcelona's La Masia academy in 2022.
However, Mendes's impact in Spain was rather unremarkable. He decided to move to England to further his career.
In a recent interview, Mendes emphasized his determination to build his own career and to separate himself from his father's overwhelming shadow. "I want to be known as Joao, not as someone else's son," he shared with ESPN.
Mendes insists that he never tried to be like his father, and feels that leaving Barcelona to develop in a new environment was the right decision.
"My father was one of the greatest players ever, and it's a source of pride to be able to talk about him. I try to play my own way, without putting pressure on myself because of my father's fame," Mendes added.
