Today, Tan Tru commune also has a road named Cong Ban. This is a wide, beautiful road connecting the Vam Co Tay River to Provincial Road 833, where the Cong Ban historical monument is located, marking the glorious victories of the local army and people in the two wars of resistance against foreign invaders.
Victory at Cong Ban
According to Nguyen Van Quyen, Party Secretary and Head of Binh Dien Hamlet, the Cong Ban historical site is a source of pride for the people of Tan Tru because it was there that the local army and people eliminated two district chiefs, one militia commander, and many other cruel oppressors. The majority of the victory belonged to the village guerrilla forces with their homemade weapons, along with the support of local troops and the district's special forces.

Speaking about the Cong Ban historical site, Mr. Nguyen Van Quyen said: “In my opinion, the Cong Ban historical site is a bright spot, a glorious milestone in the history of resistance against foreign invaders in this region. In that area, we not only eliminated many cruel oppressors, including two district chiefs, but more importantly, Cong Ban was located very close to the enemy's forts and outposts. It can be said that our guerrillas fought and won right under the enemy's nose.”
As someone knowledgeable about local history, Mr. Quyen said that the Cong Ban area was formerly considered the gateway to Tan Tru district. The surrounding area had many wild plants, especially mangrove trees growing densely along the canals and ditches, so the locals commonly called it Cong Ban (Mangrove Canal).
In terms of location, Cong Ban is situated on Provincial Road 833, the only road and vital artery leading into the former Tan Tru district, now belonging to the communes of Vam Co, Tan Tru, and Nhut Tao. Controlling this road meant controlling the entire Tan Tru area. Therefore, the enemy concentrated their forces to build a system of forts, outposts, and military bases to hold onto this crucial area at all costs.
They built Tan Tru district with the intention of cutting off the strategic corridor of the revolutionary forces from the South to the North along National Highway 1, and at the same time severing communication between localities. This was because Tan Tru possessed a convenient waterway transportation system with the Nhut Tao River, Vam Co Tay River, Ong Hong Canal, etc.
With its strategically important location and dense, mangrove-covered terrain, ideal for setting up ambushes, laying mines, and sniping, Cong Ban facilitated our forces' secret approach and safe withdrawal after combat, becoming a place that commemorated many glorious victories of the army and people of Tan Tru.
From the resistance against French colonialism to the years of fighting against American imperialism, many famous battles took place at Cong Ban. In 1948, on the occasion of the French National Day, our troops planted mines to attack a vehicle carrying officials and local council members attending the ceremony, killing one French official and two vicious Vietnamese traitors on the spot.
The victory dealt a powerful blow to the enemy and boosted the fighting spirit of our army and people. In 1962, we continued to plant improvised mines on the Cong Ban section, destroying the Jeep carrying District Chief Minh and two security guards. Truong Hoa Minh was a notorious thug, a leading figure in the strategic hamlet construction movement in Tan Tru at that time. Eliminating him meant we had shaken the enemy's governing apparatus and thwarted their plan to build model strategic hamlets in the area.
After Truong Hoa Minh's death, the enemy appointed Do Kien Gam as District Chief and Hen as Commander of the militia. In 1963, when District Chief Gam and Commander Hen's vehicle reached the Cong Ban area, where our special forces had planted mines, the enemy vehicle exploded. We killed District Chief Gam, Commander Hen, and several security guards, while our side suffered no casualties.
Also that year, another victory was achieved in the Cong Ban area, where with only 3 comrades, we planted mines and ambushed an enemy convoy, killing 20 enemy soldiers and wounding 7 others.
Throughout the years of resistance, Cong Ban became a source of terror for the invaders as our army and people coordinated numerous surprise attacks, while simultaneously destroying roads, building booby traps, and laying mines to wear down the enemy's forces. The army and people of Tan Tru united as one, determined to protect the strategic corridor of the revolution.
Tan Tru today
Today, the spirit of solidarity and unity that led to resounding victories at Cong Ban continues to be upheld by the Party Committee, government, and people of Tan Tru in the process of building their homeland. In particular, during the period of operating the two-tiered local government model, Tan Tru quickly stabilized its organizational structure, received and resolved the transferred tasks from the old administrative units, ensuring smooth operation without affecting people's lives or socio-economic development.
Local authorities have proactively promoted digital transformation and administrative reform, improving the quality of service for citizens and businesses. Almost all administrative documents are processed on time or ahead of schedule. The satisfaction level of citizens and businesses is approximately 98%.

According to Nguyen Thi Phuc, Chairwoman of the Tan Tru Commune People's Committee, when the two-tiered local government model comes into operation, the commune level becomes the most direct and people-friendly administrative level, simultaneously providing public services, handling administrative procedures, and organizing the implementation of economic and social development policies, ensuring national defense, security, and social welfare.
Despite facing many challenges, with the support of the people, Tan Tru has become one of the localities that effectively implemented the new model right from the beginning.
Thanks to the concerted efforts of the people, many infrastructure projects such as electricity, roads, schools, and health stations in the area have been invested in and completed, contributing to improving the quality of life and creating momentum for the locality to complete the construction of a new rural commune in the near future.
"In order to improve the quality of life for the people, the locality is focusing on upgrading and expanding rural transportation routes according to the motto 'The State and the People work together'. Many roads that were previously concreted but still narrow are being expanded and have received very high consensus from the people," added Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuc.
This spirit of consensus was clearly demonstrated by the fact that many households voluntarily dismantled fences, relocated trees, and donated land to expand the road. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lua (residing in Binh Dien hamlet), who proactively dismantled about 50 meters of her sturdy fence to facilitate the expansion of Nguyen Van Nhon road, shared: “For the common good, when the local authorities proposed the road construction, my family immediately agreed. Although relocating the fence was costly, all family members agreed and supported the project.”
The unity of the people has been helping Tan Tru commune to innovate day by day and continue writing new chapters in its history. The locality strives to complete key targets for the year such as achieving a state budget revenue of 96.8 billion VND, a health insurance participation rate of 97.8%, a clean water usage rate of over 70%, and reducing the number of poor households by 6 this year,...
The remnants of past battles now only remain on memorial plaques and in the memories of the people. However, the indomitable spirit, the will to unite, and the aspiration for progress from the Cong Ban area are still being carried on, becoming the driving force for Tan Tru commune's strong development on its journey to building a prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland.
