Digital technology helps EVNNPC reduce power losses.

Despite managing a vast power grid encompassing many mountainous and remote areas, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has consistently maintained a reduction in power losses over the past years. This result reflects the effectiveness of promoting digital transformation, modernizing the metering system, and applying advanced operational monitoring technologies.

EVNNPC's power loss has fallen to its lowest level ever.

Reducing power losses is one of the key tasks of EVN's units to improve production and business efficiency, save costs, use energy resources effectively, and contribute to environmental protection. This task was also emphasized by the Prime Minister in Directive No. 10/CT-TTg dated March 30, 2026, on strengthening the implementation of electricity saving and developing rooftop solar power.

In recent years, EVNNPC has achieved many positive results in reducing electricity losses. After 5 years, the Corporation's electricity loss rate decreased from 4.54% in 2021 to 3.54% in 2025 - the lowest level ever. Thus, over the past 5 years, EVNNPC's electricity loss rate has decreased by 1 percentage point, continuing to maintain a sustainable downward trend.

Mr. Vu Anh Phuong, Deputy General Director of EVNNPC, stated that the Corporation manages the power grid in 17 provinces and cities in Northern Vietnam (excluding Hanoi ), including many mountainous and remote areas with complex terrain, dispersed loads, and large power supply radii. This is one of the unique characteristics that directly affects the Corporation's efforts to reduce power losses.

In mountainous areas, medium and low voltage power lines are often long, the load is not concentrated, and the load factor is low, leading to higher technical losses compared to urban areas, plains, or industrial zones. In addition, complex terrain conditions also increase difficulties in operation management, on-site inspection, fault handling, and investment in power grid upgrades.

Furthermore, EVNNPC also faces the increasing demand for electricity supply while the load continues to grow strongly, especially during the hot season. Many power lines and transformers have to operate at full capacity, even overloaded, during peak hours. This requires the management of power loss to be carried out regularly, continuously, and with increasing effectiveness.

Clearly identifying the challenges has helped EVNNPC develop appropriate solutions to effectively achieve the goal of reducing power losses. Among these, improving the quality of power grid operation management coupled with the application of digital technology has been identified as one of the key solutions.

According to Mr. Vu Anh Phuong, in the roadmap for building a smart grid and promoting digital transformation, EVNNPC has implemented many technological solutions to improve operational management efficiency and reduce power losses. A notable example is the remote electronic metering system combined with a metering data management platform.

This solution automates the collection of electricity usage data with high accuracy, significantly reducing manual operations, while supporting near real-time monitoring of electricity production. Through the system, units can quickly detect anomalies in production, load, remote metering disconnections, or measurement data discrepancies to promptly address them, thereby contributing to controlling and reducing electricity losses.

In addition, EVNNPC is effectively utilizing technical management systems and grid operation databases, allowing for the monitoring of power losses down to each transmission line, substation, and management area. Digital data analysis helps units accurately identify the causes of losses, thereby enabling them to develop appropriate technical and management solutions, improving the efficiency of power system operation and management.

Furthermore, modern technological devices such as thermal cameras, partial discharge measuring devices, and operational status monitoring equipment are being widely applied to detect defects in the power grid early, such as overheating contact points, phase imbalances, or local overloads. As a result, many potential power loss risks are addressed promptly, contributing to improved power supply reliability.

Thanks to the increased application of digital technology and modern monitoring solutions, power loss management at EVNNPC has shifted from traditional methods to a more proactive, accurate, and efficient approach. This is also an important foundation for the Corporation to continue developing smart grids, improving the quality of electricity supply, and enhancing system operation efficiency.

In addition, EVNNPC continues to strengthen inspection, supervision, and urging of units to synchronously implement technical and management solutions to improve the efficiency of power system operation and ensure safe and stable electricity supply for customers.

To continue effectively achieving the goal of reducing power losses as stipulated in Prime Minister's Directive No. 10, in addition to the efforts of the Corporation's employees, EVNNPC proposes that competent authorities continue to pay attention to allocating resources and improving mechanisms and policies to support investment, renovation, and upgrading of the power grid, especially in mountainous areas, remote areas, and areas with high load growth rates. This is a crucial condition for improving the operational capacity of the power system, reducing power losses, and enhancing the quality of electricity supply.

The corporation also hopes that localities will continue to cooperate in land clearance and protection of power grid safety corridors; and at the same time, cooperate in strengthening the dissemination of information on the efficient and economical use of electricity.

According to Mr. Vu Anh Phuong, Deputy General Director of EVNNPC, with the attention and support of ministries, sectors, and localities, along with the synchronized implementation of technical and management solutions, EVNNPC will continue to effectively control the electricity loss rate, improve the efficiency of the power system operation, and ensure safe and stable electricity supply to serve the socio-economic development of the Northern region.
