In a June 18th post on the Truth Social platform, President Trump officially confirmed that Apple had agreed to partner with Intel to design and manufacture chips in the United States.
This post comes after Trump reportedly discussed semiconductor supply chains at the G7 summit. Plans to reduce reliance on chip manufacturing in Taiwan were a key topic at the event.
According to AppleInsider, citing a memo to investors written by analyst Dan Ives, the deal between Apple and Intel is a large-scale, multi-year contract.
Many sources suggest that under this agreement, the American semiconductor giant will primarily be responsible for manufacturing older generation or lower-end microprocessors.
Intel will not be manufacturing chips for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max, nor the M5 chip or newer generations of processors for Macs.
AppleInsider suggests the most likely scenario is that Intel will be responsible for manufacturing older M-series chips for devices like the iPad Pro and MacBook Air. The company may also manufacture processors for standard iPhone models.
It's not unprecedented for a partner other than TSMC to manufacture processors for Apple. In the past, Samsung was the supplier of Apple's A-series chips.
It is highly likely that Apple will focus TSMC's limited production capacity on the most advanced processors, such as the next-generation 2nm chip design expected to be featured in the iPhone 18 series.
Meanwhile, Intel has only recently begun testing its 18A-P process on a very limited scale. This means Intel will not be able to reach its maximum chip production capacity for Apple, at least not until mid-2027.
Besides political factors, the iPhone manufacturer was also forced to seek alternatives to TSMC amid a global chip shortage. Due to the enormous demand for AI processors worldwide, Apple lost its position as "TSMC's biggest customer" to Nvidia.
This shortage is believed to be the reason Apple has delayed the launch of both the Mac Studio M5 and the touchscreen MacBook Pro. In addition, Apple has also had to stop selling some Mac configurations due to continued memory supply issues.
