What is a treble?

In football, a "treble" refers to a team winning three major titles in a single season. It is considered one of the greatest achievements a professional club can attain.

What are the different types of triple-winning owls?

Continental Treble

This is the most prestigious form of the "treble," requiring a team to win all three of the following championships simultaneously in a single season:

  • National championship (the highest-level domestic league).
  • National Cup (the main knockout cup tournament of the nation).
  • The highest continental trophy (e.g., UEFA Champions League in Europe, Copa Libertadores in South America, CAF Champions League in Africa).

Winning a domestic double combined with a second-tier continental trophy (such as the UEFA Europa League) is sometimes described as a continental treble, but this is not widely accepted.

Domestic Treble

This achievement is accomplished when a club wins all three major domestic titles in a single season, including:

  • National championship.
  • The main national cup.
  • A secondary trophy (usually a league cup, for example, the English League Cup - EFL Cup).

A domestic treble is only achievable in countries that have all three domestic leagues.

Which titles are not included in the Treble count?

Titles decided in just one or two matches are generally not counted as part of a treble. These tournaments include:

  • National Super Cups (e.g., English Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup).
  • Continental Super Cup (e.g., UEFA Super Cup).
  • FIFA Club World Cup.
  • Intercontinental Cup (formerly known as the Intercontinental Cup).
Special cases

The Sextuple

This is an achievement even greater than the treble, when a team wins six titles in a single calendar year or a single season.

- Barcelona (2009): Under coach Pep Guardiola, Barcelona made history by winning all six titles, including La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. This achievement was hailed by international media as "unprecedented" and solidified their position as the world's number one team.

- Bayern Munich (2019-2020): Under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick, Bayern also completed a sextuple with titles including the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, UEFA Champions League, German Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

The case of Liverpool

Liverpool Football Club had two seasons where they won three notable titles:

- In the 1983–84 season, the team won three titles: the national championship (formerly First Division), the League Cup, and the European Cup (the predecessor of the Champions League).

- In the 2000–01 season, Liverpool won the English League Cup, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Cup. This achievement was mocked and ridiculed by many as "Mickey Mouse's treble".

Men's football

To date, 23 men's clubs have achieved this feat. European teams have won the most continental trebles. Notably, no South American (CONMEBOL) team has achieved this feat according to the standard definition; Barcelona and Bayern Munich are the only two clubs to have won the treble twice; Al Ahly and Auckland City are the only teams to have won the continental treble four times.

Women's Football

The later development of continental tournaments for women is the reason for fewer treble wins compared to men. Notably, Lyon is the most successful women's club with 5 treble wins, a record for both men's and women's football.
