Apple has just unveiled a new line of affordable MacBooks, marking a major shift in the global laptop market. Starting at $599 , the MacBook Neo breaks the dominance of Windows PC manufacturers in the mainstream price segment and is expected to boost Apple's sales this year.
Traditional PC brands have expressed concern. "For a high-end brand, the low price of the MacBook Neo is a shock to the entire PC industry," said Nick Wu, ASUS's Chief Financial Officer.
Speaking at a recent press conference, ASUS CEO SY Hsu also stated that the entire PC ecosystem, including Microsoft, Intel, and AMD, is discussing strategies to cope with the situation. They are forced to upgrade the quality of their products and cannot rely solely on the price advantage they had before.
The arrival of the MacBook Neo gives Apple a huge advantage. Market research firm TrendForce has just published a detailed report with very optimistic forecasts, suggesting that Apple could sell 4-5 million MacBook Neo units this year.
This new computer model will significantly boost Apple's overall computer shipments. Growth is expected to reach nearly 8%, occurring amidst a generally declining market.
Meanwhile, the overall picture for the laptop market is quite bleak. TrendForce estimates that laptop shipments will decrease by 9.2% in 2026. Consumer demand for electronic devices remains low. The majority of consumers are tightening their spending.
In that context, an affordable MacBook became the focus of attention because it perfectly met the needs of budget-conscious shoppers. Experts believe Apple chose a very opportune time for its launch.
Another challenge for Windows PC manufacturers stems from the supply chain crisis. PC manufacturers are facing component shortages, with RAM and SSD prices rising daily. This shortage is fueled by the artificial intelligence craze, prompting data centers to urgently stockpile large quantities of memory chips. This scarcity is projected to last until the end of 2027.
High component costs are forcing Windows PC manufacturers to cut back on their product lines. Companies are discontinuing production of low-cost models, prioritizing components for higher-end computers, leading to significantly higher retail prices. TrendForce predicts that Windows PC prices could increase by 30-40% due to rising component and CPU costs.
In contrast to that situation, Apple is largely immune to this price increase. The American technology company designs its own line of silicon chips and also holds numerous component supply contracts.
The MacBook Neo attracts users with its sturdy unibody aluminum design. The 13-inch Liquid Retina display delivers sharp image quality and superior resolution compared to other PCs in the same price range. Equipped with an A18 Pro processor, it can handle basic work tasks. Students particularly appreciate the battery life and the youthful color options of this model.
