According to Bloomberg , Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone will receive an iOS operating system update, for the first time supporting an iPad-style app layout and the ability to run two apps simultaneously. This will improve multitasking capabilities, taking advantage of the larger screen size.
Apple's new layout is expected to add a menu bar to the left side of the screen, similar to the current iPad app layout. Developers will also be able to update their apps to match the new interface, and when the device is rotated horizontally, it will have a similar aspect ratio to the iPad.
Based on rumors, the main screen of the foldable iPhone will be approximately the size of an iPad mini, while the outer screen will be comparable to a smaller iPhone.
The internal display is expected to have a wide aspect ratio, different from the elongated aspect ratio commonly seen today. Sources indicate that this will be a key element Apple will focus on when promoting the device.
Apple is under pressure to differentiate itself with foldable smartphones. The first iPhone with the new design is expected to be unveiled in September, seven years after rival Samsung launched the first generation Galaxy Z Fold.
"Apple's design aims to make the device more appealing for video viewing. This also makes it easier for developers to redesign iPhone apps to resemble iPad software," analyst Mark Gurman quoted an anonymous source as saying.
Despite offering an iPad-like experience, the foldable iPhone still runs the standard iOS operating system instead of iPadOS. This means the product will maintain a simple multitasking system, rather than the ability to run apps in windowed mode like iPadOS 26.
However, rumors suggest the product will still support running two apps side-by-side, similar to foldable smartphones from companies like Samsung and Google.
During development, Apple concluded that the two biggest drawbacks of current foldable smartphones are the limited screen space and the easily visible crease. Overcoming these issues is not simple, causing the company to enter the segment much later than its competitors.
According to Bloomberg , Apple has opted for new display technology to minimize creases. While it can't eliminate them completely, this approach could offer a competitive advantage. Durability is also a key issue to address.

The foldable iPhone's outer screen is expected to integrate a punch-hole selfie camera. Apple is likely to remove Face ID facial recognition, instead integrating Touch ID into the power button, similar to some iPad models.
"Besides this solution, Apple has no other choice because the front of the foldable iPhone is too thin to accommodate Face ID. The circular hole design still supports the Dynamic Island interface for viewing notifications and app updates," Gurman emphasized.
With its in-display design, Apple is testing two solutions for the selfie camera: hiding it under the screen or a punch-hole cutout. During testing, the company confirmed that placing the camera under the screen resulted in lower image quality.
The foldable iPhone's back is expected to feature two rear cameras, fewer than the iPhone Pro. However, Apple believes that its large internal screen, multitasking support, and a price tag of around $2,000 will make the foldable iPhone the company's most premium device. The company also aims to attract users of foldable Android smartphones to switch to the foldable iPhone.
