"Syrup" causes widespread poisoning among students.

Toxicology and pediatrics specialists from Bach Mai Hospital examine the health of students who were poisoned by rat poison.

Earlier, on the evening of January 22nd, the Pediatric Center and the Poison Control Center of Bach Mai Hospital successively received 32 child patients, mostly students from grades 1 to 5 of Phu Binh Primary School in Tuyen Quang City, Tuyen Quang Province. All of these children were diagnosed with suspected accidental ingestion of pink-colored rat poison in syrup form.

According to the children, this "syrup" smells like candy. On the morning of January 21st, a child went to the tea plantation next to the school and found a bag containing many red and blue plastic tubes. The child took one tube back to school and shared it with a friend. Afterwards, other children also took these tubes back to school.

The "syrup" is actually rat poison that caused many students in Tuyen Quang to be poisoned after they shared and drank it.

Additionally, another child picked up a bag containing several pink water tubes from a bush near the school gate and shared them to drink from.

In addition to the 32 children mentioned above, the National Children's Hospital is also treating 5 children involved in the same incident. All of these children were admitted on January 21st, and their urine tests all came back positive for the rat poison fluoroacetate.

Find other toxins.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen, Director of the Poison Control Center, who directly participated in treating the children in the poisoning incident, said that the children had been examined, assessed, and tested for indicators of damage caused by poisoning; toxins in urine, and magnetic resonance imaging. Some were also indicated for echocardiography.

One child exhibited seizures at the hospital. Two children showed brain damage on MRI scans. Several children showed signs of impaired heart function, but all are conscious and being closely monitored and treated according to protocol.

Dr. Nguyen shared that doctors try not to overlook other causes related to toxins. The prognosis for these children's health will only be determined after the first few days, depending on the subsequent developments.

Doctors from Bach Mai Hospital are instructing the school and neighboring schools to review the risk of any remaining tubes of rat poison or any other chemicals on school grounds, identify all children who may have ingested these liquids or any other suspected chemicals, and recommend local hospitalization.

"At the same time, we will notify the investigating agency and the authorities to find the cause and origin, ensuring that no other toxins are overlooked and that no other children who have been poisoned are missed," Dr. Nguyen added.
