On January 6th, Thu Duc General Hospital announced that it had successfully performed surgery to preserve the ovaries of a 17-year-old patient (residing in Dong Thanh commune, Ho Chi Minh City).
Upon admission, patient HTN presented with severe abdominal pain, with no prior history of gynecological conditions. Clinical examination revealed a tense mass in the lower abdomen, approximately 17x18 cm in size, mobile and tender to the touch.

The MRI results showed no abnormalities in the uterus, but both ovaries had two twisted dermoid cysts – a dangerous emergency complication. The right ovarian cyst measured approximately 13×15 cm, and the left cyst measured 8×10 cm.
The surgical team completely removed two large tumors containing teeth, hair, bone, and skin, along with approximately 2 liters of fluid. Thanks to the timely intervention, the young woman's ovaries were fully preserved.
According to Dr. Cao Thi Thom, Department of Obstetrics, Thu Duc General Hospital, if ovarian torsion is not surgically treated promptly, it will cause blockage of the blood vessels supplying the ovary, leading to ischemia and necrosis. At that point, preservation is impossible and removal is necessary. In cases of bilateral torsion, patients risk losing their natural fertility, experiencing early endocrine disorders, premature menopause, and serious physical and psychological impacts, especially in adolescence.

In addition, necrotic ovaries can rupture, causing peritonitis, sepsis, and life-threatening conditions if not treated promptly. Patients may experience severe, prolonged abdominal pain, accompanied by vomiting and high fever.
Doctors recommend that women, including teenagers, should seek medical attention early if they experience any of the above unusual symptoms. Regular gynecological checkups every 6–12 months are an important measure to help detect ovarian diseases early.
