- With a spirit of self-reliance and self-improvement, the veterans of Binh Gia commune have risen to develop their economy , resulting in many effective production and business models that contribute to improving their lives and affirming the position of soldiers in everyday life.
For over 10 years, the family of war veteran Trinh Dinh Van in Pa Nim village has been one of the most successful veteran-run businesses in the area. After leaving the military in 2015, Mr. Van discussed with his wife the idea of starting a bottled water and ice business. Thanks to their perseverance and systematic investment, their business has now become a reliable supplier, providing products to many neighboring communes, schools, and agencies in the area. Not only does it provide a stable income for the family, but it also creates jobs for 7 local workers, each earning 7 million VND per month.

Veteran Trinh Dinh Van shared: "I believe that economic development is also a way to continue contributing. We're not just building clean water facilities to earn income, but also to bring the heart of a soldier into production to protect the health of the local people. Seeing that our facility creates jobs for local workers and increases my family's income makes me very happy and proud."
Following the spirit of "retirement without stopping work," veteran Duong Van Kha, from Hamlet 6A, Binh Gia Commune, immediately started a gas business and safe vegetable farming after retiring in 2010. Currently, in addition to his successful gas shop, he has converted 700 square meters of rice paddy land to grow seasonal safe vegetables to supply local residents and some food service establishments. This dynamic combination has brought in an income of 100 to 120 million VND per year after deducting expenses.
Mr. Kha said: "I've always thought that as a soldier, I must be a role model for my children and grandchildren to follow. As long as I have the strength, I will continue to work, both to provide for my family and to contribute my small part to the change in my homeland. My family owns a gas shop that's doing quite well. As for the vegetable garden, we grow seasonal vegetables such as kohlrabi, cabbage, pumpkin leaves, water spinach, and jute mallow... all guaranteed safe and free of chemicals, so they are trusted by many customers."
Besides the two models mentioned above, the entire Binh Gia commune currently maintains 25 economic models run by war veteran association members. These models focus on livestock farming, crop cultivation, services, and small-scale production, generating incomes ranging from 70 to 150 million VND per year. Notably, by the beginning of 2026, the percentage of well-off and wealthy war veteran households in the commune had reached 84%; the entire association no longer has any poor war veteran households. With these achievements, in 2025, the Binh Gia Commune War Veteran Association was honored to receive a commendation from the Central Committee of the Vietnam War Veteran Association for outstanding achievements in the "Exemplary War Veterans" emulation movement.
To achieve these results, the Veterans Association of Binh Gia commune has implemented many comprehensive solutions. Mr. Nong Ngoc Quy, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Binh Gia commune, said: The association currently has 896 members, operating in 25 branches. After the merger of the commune-level administrative units (from July 1, 2025), with a large number of members and a wide geographical area, the Veterans Association of the commune has proactively implemented many solutions to awaken the spirit of self-reliance and self-improvement among members, encouraging them to change their production mindset and aim for sustainable economic development. Specifically, we understand the actual needs of members regarding capital and production knowledge, thereby creating conditions for members to access support resources.
In the first nearly three months of 2026, tax revenue from import and export activities collected by Huu Nghi International Border Gate Customs reached VND 2,097 billion out of VND 4,489 billion for the entire Customs Sub-department of Region VI (as of March 20th), an increase of 90% compared to the same period in 2025. |
“During the process of propaganda and mobilization, the association focuses on guiding members to develop the economy in accordance with the characteristics of each area. Specifically, for members in the former Binh Gia town area, the association encourages the development of business and service models… suitable for urban conditions. In the former Mong An and Hoang Van Thu communes, the association guides members to develop valuable forestry and fruit trees such as oil palm, acacia, star anise, dragon fruit… Through this, the association gradually exploits the potential and advantages of each area effectively so that members can utilize them to develop the economy,” Mr. Quy added.
Regarding capital resources, the association currently manages 6 savings and loan groups entrusted by the Social Policy Bank with a total outstanding loan balance of over 21.6 billion VND, providing loans to 260 veteran members for economic development. The capital is used for its intended purpose, effectively, and without overdue payments. In addition, a portion of the "Comradeship Fund" contributed by members is also allocated to support members' economic development. Furthermore, the commune's Veterans Association has focused on coordinating and organizing training courses, transferring scientific and technical knowledge, and guiding the application of technological advancements in production and business.
It can be affirmed that the economic development movement of the Veterans Association of Binh Gia commune not only brings prosperity to each member's family but also enhances the image of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" in the new era.
