- With a spirit of self-reliance and unwavering effort, veteran Lanh Dang Dong (born in 1987), from Phien Mau village, Yen Phuc commune, has boldly developed a model of macadamia nut cultivation combined with livestock farming, bringing high economic efficiency and contributing to stabilizing and improving his family's life.
Introduced by officials from the Veterans Association of Yen Phuc commune, we visited Mr. Dong's economic model in early June. In his large macadamia orchard, the trees were laden with fruit, each branch carefully propped up to prevent breakage. Under the scorching summer sun, he diligently tended to each tree. Taking a break to chat with us, Mr. Dong shared: "In 2012, after being discharged from the army and returning to my hometown, I continued to develop the economy on my family's land with traditional crops such as rice and corn, and small-scale livestock farming."

Despite hard work, the economic benefits from traditional crops were not commensurate with the effort invested. Concerned about finding a more effective economic development strategy, Mr. Dong proactively researched production models suitable for local conditions. Recognizing the high economic value of macadamia trees and their suitability to the climate and soil of Yen Phuc commune, in 2019 he boldly planted 300 trees on an area of approximately 1 hectare as a trial.
To ensure the macadamia trees grow and develop well, Mr. Dong constantly learns about production knowledge and experience through the internet and actively participates in training courses on scientific and technical transfer organized by the Farmers' Association, the Veterans' Association, and specialized agencies. Thanks to applying the correct care procedures, the orchard is growing well, demonstrating its adaptability to local conditions. Based on these initial results, in 2021 he continued to expand by another 2 hectares, bringing the total area of macadamia trees in his family to over 3 hectares.
Mr. Dong said: "Macadamia trees need to be cared for according to proper procedures, from weeding, fertilizing, pruning to monitoring and controlling pests and diseases. During the production process, my family mainly weeds by hand, limits the use of pesticides and does not use herbicides in order to maintain soil fertility and create conditions for sustainable tree growth."
Thanks to the consistent application of appropriate technical measures, Mr. Dong's macadamia trees have always grown well, with a high fruit setting rate and stable yields over the years. After more than 4 years of focused investment and care, his family's more than 3 hectares of macadamia trees have begun to yield a stable harvest. In 2024 and 2025, the macadamia orchard is expected to produce more than 10 tons of fruit with an average selling price of about 35,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, Mr. Dong's family will earn a profit of about 130 million VND per year. This year, Mr. Dong's macadamia orchard is expected to yield about 5 tons of fruit.
Besides growing macadamia trees, Mr. Dong's family also cultivates over 3 hectares of anise and raises 4 white horses, 4 buffaloes, 20 pigs, and nearly 100 chickens. Thanks to developing this integrated economic model, after deducting expenses, the family earns between 250 and 300 million VND per year.
Not only has he built a stable life through developing his family's economy, but Mr. Dong is also a dedicated and responsible grassroots official. As the Party Branch Secretary and Head of Phien Mau village, he consistently sets a good example and takes the lead in local movements, actively promoting and encouraging the people to effectively implement the Party's guidelines and the State's policies and laws. The success of his family's economic model has also contributed to creating a ripple effect, encouraging people to boldly develop production and increase their income.
Mr. Ha Van Tue, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Yen Phuc commune and Chairman of the Veterans Association of Yen Phuc commune, said: "Member Lanh Dang Dong is an exemplary and dynamic young veteran in economic development. His family's macadamia nut cultivation and livestock farming model has brought high economic efficiency and is one of the typical models of the commune's Veterans Association. Mr. Dong also regularly exchanges and shares production experiences with members, contributing to spreading the movement of veterans helping each other develop the economy in the locality."
With diligence, dynamism, and a spirit of overcoming difficulties, Mr. Lanh Dang Dong has gradually built a stable life, becoming one of the exemplary members of the locality, contributing to spreading the movement of war veterans helping each other develop economically.
