Born in Hue in 1970 and rising to fame in Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Van Loi was once considered a "prodigy" of Vietnamese football. Despite being less than 1.60 meters tall, he was a terror to opposing defenses in the domestic league.

The name of the late football legend Ho Van Loi is closely associated with the once-famous Saigon Port team (later renamed Southern Steel - Saigon Port). Ho Van Loi won the national football championship three times in 1994, 1997, and 2002. In the 2001-2002 season alone, Ho Van Loi won the top scorer title with 9 goals.
He became the second domestic striker to win this title in the history of the V-League (since the national football championship was renamed V-League, from the 2000-2001 season), after the first to achieve this, striker Dang Dao of Khanh Hoa Club.
This achievement was only replicated by a third domestic striker 15 years later: Nguyen Anh Duc of the former Becamex Binh Duong club, who accomplished it in the 2017 V-League.

Ho Van Loi is considered one of the most outstanding students of the late renowned coach Pham Huynh Tam Lang. Ho Van Loi has a very unique playing style; he is extremely unpredictable, making it almost impossible for defenders and goalkeepers to anticipate his moves.
In recent years, Ho Van Loi had been battling a serious illness. His colleagues and former teammates organized fundraising matches to help him. Early this morning, his family announced that Ho Van Loi could not be saved.
Ho Van Loi passed away at the age of 55, leaving behind deep sorrow for all Vietnamese football fans. One of the most unconventional players in the history of domestic football has left his fans forever.
