Google has just announced an expansion of the Quick Share feature on Pixel smartphones, allowing data to be sent and received with iPhones via AirDrop. This is seen as a move to overcome the monopoly of its competitors' ecosystems.

First introduced on the iPhone in 2013, AirDrop supports high-speed wireless file transfer between devices within the Apple ecosystem. Google has also equipped Android with a similar feature called Quick Share.

Speaking to Bloomberg , a Google representative said that Apple was not involved in the feature's development, emphasizing that when it comes to sharing moments with family and friends, using an Apple or Google device "doesn't matter."

"We achieved this through a self-developed solution," a Google representative said. The representative added that the company partnered with security firm NetSPI, and the feature's rollout was closely monitored to maintain privacy and security.

Dave Kleidermacher, Vice President of Platform Security and Privacy at Google, asserts that this solution ensures privacy because data is shared directly between devices.

“The feature doesn’t use alternatives; it still relies on direct, peer-to-peer connections. This means your data never passes through a server, shared content isn’t logged, and no other data is recorded,” Kleidermacher emphasized.

To receive files from a Pixel device, iPhone users need to set the AirDrop setting on their device to " Everyone for 10 minutes ". Similar to the usual process, users can then agree to or decline to receive files.

Currently, Google's solution is only available for the Pixel 10 series. According to Bloomberg , the process of sending photos back and forth between the Pixel 10 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max is seamless. The Pixel can also send files to a nearby Mac computer.

To ensure stable functionality, 9to5Google advises Pixel 10 users to update to the latest version of the Quick Share Extension from the Play Store, then restart their device. Google plans to expand the solution to more devices in the future.

To protect privacy, AirDrop automatically moves recipients of files to their contacts after 10 minutes. Therefore, iPhone users need to enable the option to receive files from everyone for 10 minutes to receive/send data from the Pixel 10.

Besides Pixel smartphones, many other brands like Oppo and Vivo have solutions for transferring files to iPhones, but users need to install an additional application. Once the application is installed, photos and files will be sent via direct Wi-Fi connection, similar to AirDrop.

Google claims the new solution offers many benefits, allowing for convenient file sharing regardless of the operating system. Previously, the company also worked to make the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging protocol compatible between the two platforms, enabling iPhones and Android devices to easily send messages and share high-quality content.

Following pressure from regulators, Apple announced support for RCS on iPhones last year. However, not all companies have been successful in supporting this proprietary iPhone feature.

In 2023, the messaging app Beeper announced successful iMessage support on Android, but the app was quickly removed by Apple. In the past, Palm also developed a solution to make the Palm Pre compatible with iTunes, which was also rejected by Apple.
