On the afternoon of July 1st, at Furama, Da Nang , the press conference for the 2nd Da Nang Asian Film Festival 2024 officially took place, with the participation of many famous international, Asian, and Vietnamese stars, filmmakers, and film experts; and filmmakers whose works are participating in the Film Festival.
Following the success of the First Da Nang Asian Film Festival, the Da Nang City People's Committee continues to direct, with the Vietnam Film Promotion Association (VFDA) taking the lead and coordinating with the Department of Culture and Sports , the Department of Tourism, and other departments and agencies of Da Nang City, UNIMedia Company, and other units to organize the Second Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF II) from July 2-6, 2024 in Da Nang.
DANAFF II will select and honor outstanding cinematic works that are rich in humanistic values, feature innovative discoveries, and possess unique artistic expression; encourage talent, and widely introduce to the public new cinematic works of high value in content and artistry from Vietnamese cinema, the Asia-Pacific region, and selected films from world cinema.
The opening press conference of the 2nd Da Nang Asian Film Festival was attended by distinguished guests and delegates. Representing Da Nang were Mr. Tran Chi Cuong - Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People's Committee and Head of the Film Festival Organizing Committee; Mr. Ha Vy - Deputy Director of the Da Nang City Department of Culture and Sports and Deputy Head of the Film Festival Organizing Committee; and Mr. Hong Quang Dang - Deputy Director of Da Nang Radio and Television Station. Representing the Vietnam Film Promotion Association were Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - President of the Vietnam Film Promotion Association and Co-Head and Director of the Film Festival; Ms. Ly Phuong Dung - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Film Department and Vice President of the Vietnam Film Promotion Association; along with delegates attending the Da Nang Asian Film Festival, including renowned international, Asian, and Vietnamese film stars, filmmakers, and film experts. The filmmakers whose works are participating in the Film Festival… especially the participation of Mr. Park Kwang-su - Chairman of the Busan Film Festival, who was personally introduced by Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan at the press conference.
Many outstanding activities and events were organized within the framework of DANAFF II. The Opening Ceremony on July 2nd, 2024 and the Closing Ceremony - Awarding Ceremony on July 6th, 2024 were broadcast live on Vietnam Television (VTV8 and VTV2), Da Nang Television, An Ninh TV, National Assembly Television, provincial and city television stations nationwide, and various digital platforms; Film screenings at Le Do, CGV, Galaxy, and Starlight cinemas, and outdoor screenings at: Lien Chieu District Administrative Park (July 3rd), Nhu Nguyet Street (July 4th), and Bach Dang Walking Street (July 5th) with a total of 103 screenings; Meet and greet programs between the audience and the film crew; Interaction programs between famous artists and the audience; Workshops and seminars: Workshop “French Cinema and its Relationship with Vietnamese Cinema” (8:30 AM on July 3rd); Seminar “Sharing experiences in connecting coastal film festivals” (4:00 PM, July 3rd); Seminar “The creative style of director Dang Nhat Minh” (9:00 AM, July 4th); Workshop “Film production cooperation - international experience and development solutions” (9:00 AM, July 5th); Workshop “Nurturing talent” (Opening 2:00 PM, July 1st; Closing 11:00 AM, July 6th).
Notably, for the first time in Vietnam, DANAFF II will award the Cinematic Achievement Award to an outstanding filmmaker. At the opening press conference of the Film Festival, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - Director of the Film Festival - revealed that the Cinematic Achievement Award will be given to People's Artist Dang Nhat Minh for his immense contributions to the national film industry.
The Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony - Award Presentation will be produced by UNIMedia, a company owned by CEO Tran Viet Bao Hoang, and directed by Tran Vi My. The performances will focus on showcasing the culture and hospitality of the people of Da Nang, as well as the distinctive features of Asian cinema; highlighting the spirit of "Vietnam's integration" and promoting the image of a dynamic and vibrant Vietnam through the image of Da Nang city - a bridge connecting Vietnam with Asia and the world.
The highlight of DANAFF II is the competition for films in two categories: the Asian Film Competition category and the Vietnamese Film Competition category, with a judging panel consisting of experts in Vietnamese and international cinema, specifically:
For the Asian Films competition category, the Jury President is the renowned French-Chinese director and writer Dai Sijie. The jury members include former Cannes Film Festival CineFondation Director Georges Goldenstern (France); Berlin Film Festival Director (2019-2024) Meriette Rissenbeek (Germany); actress Tran Nu Yen Khe; and young director Ha Le Diem.
For the Vietnamese Films in Competition category, the Jury Chairman is the renowned Hong Kong director Kwan Kam-pang; the jury members include producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc; actress and People's Artist Le Khanh; director Leon Quang Le; and coordinator and program director Lorna Tee - Secretary General of the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN).
For the NETPAC Award, the Jury Chairman is Mr. Jean-Marc Thérouanne (Co-founder and Co-Director of the Vesoul Asian Film Festival, France); the jury members are Dr. Mara Matta, Sapienza University, Rome, Italy; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thi Bich Ha, former Rector of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Theatre and Film, and Head of the Faculty of Arts at Van Lang University.
The non-competition film screening program includes: the "Vietnamese Cinema Today" program, the "Focus on French Cinema" program, the Da Nang film program, and the Varan film program.
Free movie tickets will be distributed by the Organizing Committee at Le Do Cinema - 46 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau District, Da Nang. In addition, the Second Da Nang Asian Film Festival will also include a press conference on the afternoon of July 3rd, 2024 at Furama Resort, with the participation of 11 film crews from both Vietnam and abroad.
The DANAFF 2024 "Nurturing Talent" workshop, season 2, will consist of two classes for young people who love acting and want to become professional actors: the "Basic Acting" class (17 students selected from over 400 applications) with instructor Lydia Park (Korea) and the "Advanced Acting" class (21 students) with instructor Tsuyoshi Sugiyama (Japan). The classes will be taught by Phan Đăng Di and Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp (Vietnam).
There will be two film screenings to kick off the two highlight programs of DANAFF II: Opening of the French Cinema Highlights program and screening of the film "Many Flavors of the World" (9:30 AM on July 2, 2024) and Opening of the Selected Films program by director Dang Nhat Minh and screening of the film "Hanoi in Winter 1946" (3:00 PM on July 2, 2024); and a Q&A session between artists, filmmakers and the audience (7:30 PM on July 4, 2024).
The Da Nang sightseeing tour program will choose Ba Na Hills, Hoi An, or a night tour of Da Nang as destinations. This activity will take place on July 4, 2024, and it is also an opportunity to promote Quang Nam tourism to international friends.
The Organizing Committee hopes that DANAFF II will truly be a captivating cinematic feast, a meeting place between cinema and artistic values, for the public who love the seventh art.
