A glorious legacy
The 1st Division was established in 1965. Under the name Farm 1, in the Central Highlands, the Division achieved glorious victories in the Plei Me Campaign, the Dak To I Campaign, the Sa Thay Campaign, etc. In August 1968, the 1st Division moved to the Southeast region and was renamed Construction Unit 1, continuing to achieve many victories. The Division fought 803 battles, eliminating 28,793 enemy soldiers, with notable battles such as Dong Pan, Vo Tung, Suoi Day, etc.
The monument honoring the heroic achievements of the 1st Division of the Southern Liberation Army in the Southeast region was inaugurated in November 2023.
Specifically in Con Tran hamlet, on the night of November 13th to 14th, 1968, the 1st Division destroyed the base of two mixed battalions of the US 1st Division. This base had a dense defense system with 36 tanks and armored vehicles, 5 layers of barbed wire fences with mines, and 40 bunkers arranged in two rings in a rake-like formation.
At exactly 11 PM, our artillery opened fire simultaneously, setting numerous enemy bunkers and tanks ablaze. After a moment of panic, the enemy put up fierce resistance. Explosive and engineering squads braved the hail of bullets, breaching barricades and opening breaches to allow infantry to charge.
The fierce battle lasted for nearly six hours. As a result, the Regiment essentially annihilated nearly two American battalions, destroyed 24 tanks, and shot down 18 helicopters. The battle not only dealt a blow to the American enemy in the Southeast battlefield but also demonstrated the courage and steely resolve of the officers and soldiers of the 1st Division.
Introducing the memorial, the head of Con Tran hamlet, Lam Oon, said: “Thanks to this monument, the people have a clearer understanding of the fighting traditions of their ancestors, as well as the peace that was bought with the blood and bones of heroes and martyrs. Thanks to the bravery and sacrifice of our elders, we have the comfortable life we have today.”
New vitality
While Tan Hoa was once a fierce battlefield during the resistance war, marking many glorious chapters in history, today this land is sporting a new look with vibrant energy.
The material and spiritual lives of the people are constantly improving. Cultural, sports , and artistic activities are flourishing, attracting large numbers of people to participate. Social welfare work is prioritized, and preferential policies for war veterans and poor households are implemented promptly and effectively.
Currently, the commune has only 14 poor households, accounting for 0.23%, and in Con Tran hamlet alone, there are no longer any poor households. This is proof of the outstanding efforts in economic development and improving the lives of the people by the local Party committee and government.
Opposite the Monument of Honor is the Ethnic Minorities Cultural Center, a cultural hub for the ethnic minorities in the area. The cultural center grounds also include a children's playground, where children from Con Tran hamlet often gather to play every afternoon.
Healthcare and education have also achieved many positive results. Basic infrastructure, equipment, and medical staff meet the initial healthcare needs of the people. Maternal and child health care and family planning programs are implemented comprehensively, with the annual vaccination rate for children under one year old consistently exceeding 95%. The natural population growth rate is controlled below 1%, contributing to improved quality of life and human resources in the locality.
According to Vu Van Minh, Vice Chairman of the Tan Hoa Commune People's Committee, the changes in Tan Hoa today are thanks to the unity and cohesion within the entire political system, as well as the close, regular, and strong relationship between the Party, the government, and the people.
"The locality always focuses on creating favorable conditions for people to actively participate in contributing ideas to the building of the Party and government, participating in social supervision and criticism, as well as effectively implementing grassroots democracy, according to the motto 'the people know, the people discuss, the people do, the people inspect, the people supervise, and the people benefit'" - Mr. Vu Van Minh affirmed.
Looking back on the journey so far, Tan Hoa has demonstrated the strength of unity, unwavering will, and aspiration for progress. The monument honoring the achievements of the 1st Division is not only a symbol of heroic memories but also a spiritual anchor for the people of Tan Hoa to continue building a prosperous and beautiful homeland, worthy of the heroic traditions of this revolutionary land.
