However, the US Secretary of State also cautioned against "overestimating expectations," noting that previous rounds of negotiations, while described as progressing, ultimately stalled.
These statements were made just days after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to plans for airstrikes against Iran to allow for "serious negotiations." However, observers believe the situation remains highly unpredictable, given that Trump has repeatedly issued ultimatums to Iran, only to change his stance at the last minute.
According to US media, President Trump's decision to prolong negotiations is causing discomfort for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. An unnamed official revealed that the two leaders "had a tense phone call" on May 20 regarding this issue, and Israel wants to continue increasing military pressure on Tehran.
Amidst negotiations that have made progress but have yet to reach a final agreement, Iran continues its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz – a strategic global energy shipping route – while the US blocks Iranian ports and diverts commercial shipping away from the area.
Regarding the nuclear issue, the US objective is to force Iran to abandon highly enriched uranium and completely prevent its ability to develop nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iran firmly maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
Pakistan continues to intensify its mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions between the US and Iran. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to visit China on May 23, and the Middle East issue is likely to be on the agenda.
