Information about the passing of Tsutomu Shibayama was posted by the animation studio Ajiado in an announcement published on March 17th. The studio stated that the director of the Doraemon series passed away on March 6th after battling lung cancer, at the age of 84. In accordance with the family's wishes, the funeral of the renowned Japanese filmmaker will be held privately, primarily attended by close relatives.
"Mr. Shibayama was involved with and contributed to the Doraemon anime and films for over 20 years as a director. He was also the general director of the Nintama Rantaro anime series. We express our deepest gratitude for the affection everyone showed him throughout his life and respectfully announce his passing," Ajiado shared.
The news of director Tsutomu Shibayama's death has left many loyal fans of the Doraemon anime series, as well as the international anime community, stunned and saddened. On social media, international fans have posted numerous tributes and remembrances to him, recalling many scenes that were part of their childhood memories.

Tsutomu Shibayama, born in 1941, was a talented Japanese manga artist and animation director. He began his career as a manga artist under the pseudonym Hajime Sanjō and later became known for directing numerous Doraemon animated films (1984-2005) for both television and feature films. His notable works featuring the futuristic robot cat include: Doraemon: Nobita and the Castle Under the Sea, Doraemon: Nobita and the Adventure in the Land of Demons, Doraemon: Nobita and the Little Space War, Doraemon: Nobita and the Iron Army, Doraemon: Nobita and the Mysterious Wind Wizards, Doraemon: Nobita and the Robot Kingdom…
Furthermore, he was behind many beloved films: Lupin the Third: Pilot Film, Makoto-chan, Mighty Cat Masked Niyander… In 1978, this talented director co-founded the animation studio Ajiado with his partner Osamu Kobayashi. Throughout his career, he received numerous prestigious awards for his significant contributions to Japanese animation. Among them, Tsutomu Shibayama received an award from the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2012 and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2018.
