Evacuate the children to avoid the flood.

According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Tuyen Quang province, during the recent floods, 43 schools were affected (one school had a student who drowned at home), 42 schools suffered damage to their facilities, with total losses estimated at approximately 10.5 billion VND; 462 schools had to suspend classes, affecting a total of 212,763 students.

Mr. Vu Khac Lan, Principal of Thuan Hoa B Ethnic Boarding Primary School (Thuan Hoa commune, Tuyen Quang province), said that from the evening of September 30th, upon realizing the complicated flood situation, the school decided to send more than 200 boarding students home to avoid the flood. In the early morning of October 1st, floodwaters began to rise into the school. Teachers had to evacuate to a hill 500 meters away from the school to ensure their safety.

Despite attempts to move equipment and property, the floodwaters rose too quickly, submerging even the roof, resulting in the destruction of all belongings. All textbooks, notebooks, and library equipment were completely ruined under a thick layer of mud; many teacher files and records were also damaged. The classroom walls were stained with dark black mud...

Due to the influence of the remnants of Typhoon No. 11, from the night of October 6th to the morning of October 7th, heavy and prolonged rain occurred in Thai Nguyen province. The intense rainfall in a short period caused serious flooding and power outages in many localities, directly affecting teaching and learning activities at educational institutions in the province.

Heavy rains have caused localized flooding in many areas. Many central roads are deeply submerged, with water rising rapidly, disrupting traffic and preventing students from getting to school. In response, many schools, from preschool to high school, have proactively suspended classes to ensure the absolute safety of students, teachers, and staff.

At Quang Vinh Kindergarten (Quan Trieu Ward, Thai Nguyen ), rising rainwater flooded the schoolyard, breaking a section of the fence and creating a dangerous situation. The school principal, Ms. Trinh Thi Thanh Binh, said: “Immediately on the afternoon of October 6th, we promptly moved documents, computers, and printers to a safe area. The school also informed students to stay home from school early in the morning to avoid any potential risks.”

Ms. Le Thi Anh Dao, Deputy Principal of Tan Long Primary School (Quan Trieu Ward, Thai Nguyen), reported that the entire first floor was deeply flooded. On the morning of October 7th, 518 students were notified to stay home from school. Equipment such as televisions and projectors were dismantled and moved to higher floors; however, some student desks and chairs were submerged and at risk of damage.

Similarly, heavy rains caused the river to rise, completely cutting off the only road leading to Na Ri Ethnic Boarding School (Na Ri commune, Thai Nguyen province). More than 270 students are trapped inside the school grounds, unable to leave. Teachers have proactively moved students to higher floors to avoid flooding. Food and essential supplies have been promptly provided by the local authorities, enough for the day. However, access and further assistance are difficult due to the strong current and the blocked access road.

Working together to mitigate the consequences.

To date, the cleanup of the school after the floods at Thuan Hoa B Ethnic Boarding Primary School (Tuyen Quang) has been basically completed, but the question of when students can return to school remains unanswered. Replacing waterlogged teaching equipment and repairing damaged facilities is proving difficult due to a lack of funding.

Principal Vu Khac Lan said that the school has over 400 students at the main campus, most of whom eat and sleep at the school. Currently, all the blankets, sheets, and school supplies have been damaged due to water damage. Therefore, the teachers' greatest wish right now is to have the necessary learning and living supplies so that the students can feel secure returning to class.

The school needs additional desks, chairs, cabinets, books, teaching equipment, blankets, and a kitchen to be able to welcome the students back to class. Local authorities, the Education Department, and relevant agencies are still urgently assisting with cleanup and recovery efforts. However, for the school to reopen, it urgently needs the support and contributions from organizations, individuals, and generous donors near and far.

“We earnestly hope for the community's support. Every act of sharing, whether it's a book, a pen, a set of desks and chairs, a mat, or a warm blanket, is a great source of encouragement for the teachers and students of the school to continue attending school and maintain the teaching and learning rhythm after the floods,” expressed teacher Vu Khac Lan.

In Thai Nguyen, due to the complex weather developments, the Department of Education and Training has issued an urgent document, requiring educational institutions throughout the province to organize 24/7 on-call duty to monitor the situation and proactively update information for staff, teachers, and students.

Schools are urgently reviewing their facilities, especially those in remote areas at high risk of landslides or flooding. Equipment, records, and machinery need to be moved to dry, safe locations. At the same time, schools should be prepared to implement online teaching if the weather continues to deteriorate.

The Department of Education and Training also requested schools to coordinate closely with local authorities and be ready to receive people seeking shelter from the storm within school grounds if safety conditions are ensured. Rain and flooding may continue in the coming days. In this context, the proactive, flexible, and highly responsible spirit of the entire education sector in Thai Nguyen will continue to be promoted to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff.

Avoid disrupting the learning rhythm.

According to a directive from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training dated October 6th, to ensure absolute safety for students, teachers, and school facilities, school principals and heads of units should proactively decide on appropriate teaching methods based on actual weather conditions in their areas, available facilities, and traffic safety; ensuring absolute safety for students, staff, teachers, and employees.

Located in Son Dong commune (Hanoi), Van Canh Secondary School issued a notice at 6:00 AM on October 7th, requesting teachers and students to continue online teaching and learning until further notice, based on the actual weather conditions each morning. About 1km from the school, the Cau Nga area (near the Coast Guard Command) intersecting with Thang Long Boulevard was severely flooded due to heavy rain last night.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, the school principal, emphasized that the schoolyard was not flooded and had good drainage. However, the residential area surrounding the school was flooded due to slow drainage caused by heavy rain from night until morning. Many teachers whose homes are far from the school also experienced flooding while commuting. Switching to online learning is the optimal solution in this flood situation.

Emphasizing safety, Ms. Van Thuy Duong, Vice Principal of Luong The Vinh Secondary and High School (Yen Hoa campus, Hanoi), said that the school will continue to have students study online. Homeroom teachers advise students and parents to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary, especially to areas with severe flooding.

“On the morning of October 7th, the power company came to the Tu Mo - Pham Hung intersection to inspect the area because it was flooded, suspected to be due to an electrical leak that caused some people passing through to experience numbness in their hands and feet. This clearly poses a safety risk. Therefore, the school will maintain online teaching according to the timetable for all classes to ensure safety as well as the curriculum,” said Ms. Van Thuy Duong.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong, Principal of Chuong Duong Secondary School (Hong Ha Ward, Hanoi), said that due to heavy rain on the morning of October 7th, which caused flooding on many streets and made travel difficult, the school sent a notice to all staff, teachers, and students to stay home for safety. The school will arrange make-up classes for students at a suitable time.

"Within the school year timeframe, we always allocate reasonable time so that schools can flexibly use it for activities if unforeseen situations arise. Online teaching is also not a bad solution when facing extreme weather, but in my opinion, letting students take time off and study at home, then having teachers arrange for make-up lessons in person later, will be more effective," Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Hong stated.
