In Taiwan, a distance learning English program has been implemented by the Office of Education since 2019. Currently, the program is being expanded to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas.
The program is designed to ensure that all students, regardless of geographical location, have access to quality English language learning. By selecting experienced English teachers to teach online, the program has brought high-quality teaching resources to schools in remote areas.
A highlight of the program lies in its application of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, to the teaching process. At some schools, such as Giang Quan Secondary School, teachers have used AI to design engaging lessons, transforming content into visual images, incorporating gamification, and providing positive feedback to enhance student participation. Furthermore, learning materials are localized and relevant to real-life situations, helping students easily grasp the material and maintain their motivation.
After six years of implementation, the program has shown positive signs with a significant increase in student interest and participation. In the future, Taiwan plans to further expand the program, aiming for bilingualism by 2030.
