According to meteorological agencies, widespread heatwaves are covering the northern and central provinces. Temperatures have been continuously rising since the morning of May 25th, making the atmosphere in many areas of Hanoi stifling. Experts warn that this heatwave causes discomfort and poses numerous health risks such as heatstroke, dehydration, or exhaustion if exposed to intense sunlight for extended periods. Outdoor temperatures today reached 40 degrees Celsius, with perceived temperatures as high as 48 degrees Celsius, due to the urban heat island effect from concrete and asphalt pavements. Many Hanoi residents choose to travel by car to avoid the sweltering heat. Others still use motorbikes as their primary mode of transportation, but they also make sure to equip themselves with protective gear such as sun-protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats.
Many international tourists come from countries that love warm sunshine, but these days they still have to actively seek out shade to rest before continuing their exploration .
Undeterred by the sweltering heat of the Monday morning, many people chose a more comfortable mode of transportation under the scorching sun: cyclo rides, strolling through the streets of Hanoi. Under the scorching sun, park and green space workers around Hoan Kiem Lake continue their daily routine after a short lunch break under the shade of ancient trees. Some are trimming the branches that are growing too tall and obstructing the view. In another corner, some workers are dragging long hoses, weaving them through the clumps of trees to water them. These days, protective suits equipped with cooling fans are a lifesaver for urban sanitation workers, helping them feel more comfortable when working under the sun for long hours.
Cool water containers were placed under the trees to help the landscaping company's workers cool down and regain their strength, enabling them to persevere in the scorching sun and complete their work. Freelance workers take a break during their lunch break on public benches under the trees in the park.
Those working in transportation, who are constantly on the road, are among the jobs most affected by the heatwave.
Many cafes and beverage shops are empty of customers sitting in their open spaces. Customers tend to choose establishments equipped with air conditioning to enjoy their drinks, chat, or work.
