The literature exam touched upon the sacred theme of love for one's homeland and country.

The biggest difference in the literature exam for the 2025 high school graduation exam is that the texts for the reading comprehension and writing sections do not use texts from any of the three current textbooks. Teachers believe the exam touched upon the sacred love for one's homeland and country.

According to Ms. Trinh Thu Tuyet, a literature teacher at the HOCMAI education system and former teacher at Chu Van An High School for the Gifted (Hanoi), the way the literature exam questions were formulated in this year's high school graduation exam is the result of the innovation in teaching and learning literature in high schools according to the 2018 General Education Program. Through reading comprehension texts in the literature textbooks, teachers provide students with knowledge of genres and the Vietnamese language, forming skills in reading comprehension, appreciation, discussion, and dialogue... so that candidates can independently solve new problems in literature and life presented in the exam questions.

The official Literature exam closely followed the structure of the sample exam published by the Ministry of Education and Training. The content of the reading comprehension and writing questions in the exam covered the knowledge and skills required for the Literature subject in the 2018 General Education Program. Specifically, as follows:

Part I. Reading Comprehension (4 points) consists of 5 questions categorized according to cognitive levels.

Questions 1 and 2 are both at the recognition level. Question 1 requires identifying the narrative perspective in the text, a familiar piece of knowledge about the narrative genre; question 2 requires identifying the two rivers in Le and Son's hometowns, a detail already present in the text. These two questions allow even students with average academic ability to achieve maximum points.

The ability to classify mainly appears in questions 3, 4, and 5 at the comprehension and application levels, requiring candidates to demonstrate depth of thinking and experience.

Question 3 is a comprehension-level question, requiring students to analyze the effect of the rhetorical device of comparison in a sentence from the excerpt – this question simultaneously tests the candidate's comprehension, analytical skills, and Vietnamese language knowledge. Question 4 is also a comprehension-level question, requiring candidates to analyze the role of a detail in conveying the text's content.

This is a question that has the potential to be relatively effective in classifying students, as it requires them to understand and appreciate not only the difficult circumstances of life during the war to defend the homeland, but also the camaraderie and solidarity of the soldiers – recognizing the significance of the details in expressing the text's theme.

Question number 5 is at the application level, requiring students to utilize their literary knowledge and understanding of life and society... not only to choose the correct answer, logical and sound reasoning, but also to demonstrate independent thinking and self-reliance by analyzing the similarities in meaning between the two details in the two texts, and recognizing the sacred connection each person has with the lands and skies of their homeland.

"Overall, the reading comprehension questions are appropriately challenging for students, testing their knowledge and skills required for the Vietnamese language subject in the 2018 General Education Program. They ensure the questions cover the correct levels of understanding and have practical relevance to their future lives," Ms. Tuyet commented.

Part II - Writing (6.0 points): Ensure the correct structure and formatting according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training dated February 16th. Since the reading comprehension material is a literary text, the social commentary section requires an essay and the literary analysis section requires a paragraph, specifically as follows:

Question 1 (2.0 points): This literary essay question specifically requires candidates to write a paragraph of approximately 200 words on an aspect of the issue drawn from the reading comprehension passage. The requirement is: "Write a paragraph (approximately 200 words) analyzing Le's feelings for Son in the reading comprehension text."

The requirement in the essay writing task is also the main content emotionally expressed in the excerpt; through analyzing Le's feelings for Son, candidates not only understand the content of the excerpt but also demonstrate the skill of analyzing an important aspect of the narrative genre. These are also familiar issues in the program's learning objectives, hopefully not posing a challenge for candidates.

Question 2 (4.0 points): This essay question requires candidates to apply their reading comprehension of the provided text and their understanding of the country's context to write an argumentative essay on the topic: Every homeland's sky is the sky of the Fatherland.

Ms. Trinh Thu Tuyet commented: "It can be seen that this is an issue with a traditional and sacred mindset, but it is also very relevant to the context of national construction and development, especially in the 'era of striving forward'."

It brings more excitement and opportunities to the contestants.

The issue is therefore both relevant and practical, touching upon the sacred love for one's homeland in the heart of every Vietnamese citizen. It can be particularly inspiring for students preparing to enter a new phase of life, where they will not only cultivate and develop their abilities and personal character, but also constantly remind themselves to keep their hearts warm with love for their country. The essay's ideas will also be very much in line with the trends of innovation and integration in our time."

Ms. Tuyet assessed that, as the first subject in the 2025 high school graduation exam and the first exam under the 2018 general education program, the literature exam has undergone fundamental changes in line with the competency-based approach to students; ensuring compliance with the regulations on the structure and format of the high school graduation exam from 2025 onwards as announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, and closely adhering to the required knowledge and skills in literature, as outlined in the 2018 general education program.

From the exam structure and content to the way questions are framed in the reading comprehension and writing sections, all demonstrate innovative efforts, offering excitement, challenges, and opportunities for candidates who are eager to learn, explore , and possess independent thinking and interpretations of issues in literature and social life.

"Of course, generations of teachers, students, and society in general are still waiting for stronger steps in the reform process, waiting for beautiful literature exam questions that are more student-centered and contribute to shaping the necessary skills and qualities of future generations of Vietnamese people," Ms. Tuyet shared.
