VnExpressVnExpress06/06/2023

The 10th grade Literature exam in Ho Chi Minh City, with the theme "Let thoughts be put into words...", has been praised by many teachers for its creativity and for providing students with ample opportunity to showcase their writing skills.

Suggested answers for Literature

Approximately 96,000 students taking the entrance exam for 10th grade in public schools in Ho Chi Minh City completed the Literature exam on the morning of June 6th.

The exam consists of three parts: Reading Comprehension, Social Commentary, and Literary Commentary. The overarching theme of the exam is "Letting thoughts be put into words...", requiring candidates to read and understand the text and express their thoughts on this topic.

Many teachers appreciated the creativity, saying that the exam provided ample opportunity for students to showcase their abilities and writing skills.

Mr. Ho Tan Nguyen Minh, Head of the Literature Department at Luong Van Chanh High School, Phu Yen , assessed the texts selected as source material for the exam as very insightful. The way the questions in the social commentary and literary analysis sections did not force students to make judgments but only offered suggestions and guidance, allowing students to freely express their own opinions and thoughts.

"This is a creative and open-ended way of formulating questions. I like this approach," commented Mr. Minh.

Ms. Ha Thi Thu Thuy, a teacher at Ha Huy Tap Secondary School in Ho Chi Minh City, assessed the topic "Letting thoughts be expressed in words..." as relatable and appropriate to the students' feelings. With this exam question, she hopes the answers will be open-minded, accepting the different thoughts of the candidates.

To elaborate further, Mr. Vo Kim Bao, Head of the Literature Department at Nguyen Du Secondary School in Ho Chi Minh City, stated that the reading comprehension material was a letter written by the test setter herself, playing the role of a teacher, and included quotations from works related to the topic. This is a new format for selecting test materials.

According to Mr. Bao, the essay question on social commentary, which begins with a poetic idea and then asks candidates to write about a given title, is a new feature compared to previous years. This question is highly selective; students with good skills will know how to present their ideas logically, linking the poetic idea and the suggested title to arrive at the issue to be discussed. Those without the necessary skills will easily stray from the topic, focusing only on the content of the poem or the given title without making a connection.

In the Literary Analysis section (question 3), candidates can choose one of two topics to write about. The themes of patriotism and family affection are both familiar topics that teachers have thoroughly reviewed. Topic one requires candidates to analyze a poem. Topic two allows students to freely choose a work, without restrictions on whether it's poetry or short stories. Topic two also includes a supplementary requirement: sharing their reading and understanding of the chosen work.

"This additional requirement isn't difficult; students are allowed to express their opinions freely. However, students who are used to learning model essays and have a stereotypical way of thinking won't understand this requirement," Mr. Bao said.

Ms. Trinh Quynh An, representative of the Literature Department of the HOCMAI system, also believes that the supplementary requirement of the second exam could confuse candidates. Those unfamiliar with it will find it difficult to systematize and organize their personal thoughts within a short time.

Overall, teachers believe that if students have a solid grasp of the material, the exam, despite its changes, is not difficult. In the Reading Comprehension section, even average candidates can score full marks.
