The Ministry of Construction recently sent a letter to the People's Committee of Can Tho City responding to the proposal to expedite investment and upgrading of facilities at Can Tho International Airport.
According to the Ministry of Construction, the main infrastructure system of Can Tho International Airport currently includes 1 runway (3,000 m x 45 m), 10 aircraft parking positions capable of handling aircraft types such as B747, B777, A320, A321 and equivalent; and 1 passenger terminal with a capacity of approximately 3 million passengers per year.
In terms of operations, the passenger volume through Can Tho Airport averaged approximately 1-1.4 million passengers per year during the period from 2019 to 2023; reaching 1.035 million passengers in 2024, and approximately 0.8 million passengers in the first nine months of 2025.
Thus, the current infrastructure of Can Tho International Airport basically meets the air transport needs of the locality and the Mekong Delta region, serving socio -economic development.

The Ministry of Construction has proposed investing 2,661 billion VND to upgrade Can Tho Airport.
According to the master plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Can Tho International Airport is planned as a 4E airport; with a capacity of 7 million passengers per year for the period 2021-2030; and a vision to reach 12 million passengers per year by 2050.
To implement the plan, the Ministry of Construction has approved the outline and tasks for the planning of Can Tho International Airport for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, and assigned the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam as the planning agency.
Therefore, the Ministry of Construction proposes that the People's Committee of Can Tho City direct relevant units to coordinate with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam in the planning process, ensuring that it is consistent with the socio-economic development orientation of the city and the region, as a basis for investment.
Regarding investment in the development of Can Tho Airport, the Ministry of Construction stated that it has proposed a need of approximately 2,661 billion VND in the medium-term public investment plan for 2026-2030 to renovate the existing runway, build a parallel taxiway, and a synchronized connecting taxiway system to enhance the operational capacity of Can Tho Airport.
Based on the capital allocated by the National Assembly and the Government, the Ministry of Construction will decide on the list of investment projects for the period 2026-2030, in accordance with the available capital and criteria approved by competent authorities.
Regarding the remaining essential infrastructure, the Ministry of Construction stated that the airport enterprise (Vietnam Airports Corporation) is responsible for investment.
Regarding aviation and non-aviation service facilities at airports, the Ministry of Construction stated that, according to the draft Law on Civil Aviation of Vietnam currently being submitted by the Government to the National Assembly at the 10th session of the 15th National Assembly, airport enterprises will be responsible for investing in these facilities.
" The Ministry of Construction requests the People's Committee of Can Tho City to direct relevant units to coordinate with Can Tho Airport enterprises to study the needs and investment plans for the remaining facilities, aviation and non-aviation service facilities to suit the needs of air transport and the socio-economic development needs of the locality ," the document from the Ministry of Construction stated.
