The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment announced that it has recently received a request for approval to implement two large-scale livestock farming complex projects from one of the world's largest pig farming companies.

Accordingly, the first project in Tan Chau ( Tay Ninh ) is expected to have a scale of 64,000 sows, producing approximately 1.6 million commercial pigs annually. The second project in Dong Phu (Binh Phuoc) has a capacity of 20,000 sows, producing approximately 500,000 market pigs annually.

According to Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnamese law currently does not prohibit raising livestock and poultry in multi-story buildings. The model of high-tech pig farming in multi-story buildings is consistent with the State's policy of promoting research, application, and transfer of science and technology , as stipulated in legal frameworks such as the Law on Animal Husbandry, Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, etc.

“However, special attention must be paid to environmental and disease safety issues. With high stocking densities and enclosed environments, if not strictly controlled, the risk of disease spread will be very high, especially when one infected individual can trigger an outbreak throughout the entire farming area. Welfare and stocking density need to be implemented appropriately for each region and province, ensuring a reasonable distance between farms and residential areas and other areas.”

"In addition, businesses need to implement strict control measures for slaughtering, processing, and product traceability, while ensuring that waste treatment systems meet standards and developing clear consumption and export plans for their output products," Mr. Dang further noted.

Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, highly appreciated the businesses' contributions to innovation and development in Vietnam's livestock industry. In the spirit of encouraging and creating favorable conditions for businesses to invest with confidence, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment requested the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to closely coordinate and carefully review the legal basis and regulations for infrastructure development.

According to the proposal, these two complexes will consist entirely of multi-story livestock buildings – each building comprising 6 floors, fully integrating areas for raising gilts, pregnant sows, farrowing sows, weaned pigs, and market-ready pigs.

This farm model is also equipped with a range of state-of-the-art technologies. A four-layer air filtration system helps eliminate dangerous pathogens such as African Swine Fever (ASF), PRRS, and PED. AI-integrated farming equipment accurately monitors the weight, health, and living environment of each individual animal. A smart deodorizing and disinfecting system removes over 95% of odors and harmful microorganisms, contributing to environmental protection.

In addition, livestock waste will be treated using advanced technology to be recycled into organic fertilizer, while wastewater will be reused to conserve resources.

While the multi-story pig farm model is new in Vietnam, it is not unfamiliar to the world. In China, a farm with an area of only 85 hectares can raise up to 2.1 million pigs, while a traditional model requires 450 hectares to achieve the same output. Another farm with only 6.7 hectares of land has raised 4,000 sows, producing 100,000 market pigs annually – nearly 10 times more efficient than traditional ground-level farms.
