A view of Kingston.

History is steeped in history.

Kingston is located along Highway 401, connecting Toronto to Montreal. Most major Canadian cities have train or bus connections to Kingston. For international visitors, the best option is to land at Toronto Pearson International Airport and then take a bus to Kingston.

Kingston is an ancient city, home to Indigenous peoples since prehistoric times. It was officially founded in the 17th century by French immigrants. Kingston is nicknamed the "limestone city" because many of its buildings are constructed from locally quarried limestone. Visitors wishing to see these limestone structures should visit the Sydenham old town. Houses two or three centuries old still exude life thanks to their vibrant paint and meticulously maintained gardens. There are even "ghost hunting" tours in Sydenham at night. Guides on this adventure will introduce visitors to the city's spooky legends and anecdotes, which are closely linked to its history.

Fort Henry, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built in the 1830s to protect the British Navy's shipyard in Kingston. While no longer of military significance, the fort serves as a "living museum," housing a British military band that performs marching drills. Visitors should visit Fort Henry in July and August. Every Wednesday afternoon, the band conducts a mock battle with cannon fire, followed by a flag-lowering ceremony at sunset.

Not far from Fort Henry is another historical site: Kingston Prison. Once Canada's oldest and most fortified prison, it closed in 2013 and became a historical landmark. Visitors to Kingston Prison have the opportunity to learn about the daily lives of prisoners, escapes, and rebellions. Some of the guides at the site are even former guards or former inmates of the old prison.

Kingston boasts many interesting museums, such as the Great Lakes Maritime Museum, the Electronic Intelligence Museum, and the MacLachlan Woodworking Museum. However, perhaps the most popular is the Hockey Museum. Canada has two Hockey Museums, one in Kingston and one in Toronto. The Kingston museum houses many artifacts contributed by renowned players such as Gordie Howe and Maurice “Rocket” Richard. Recently, the museum has also been equipped with virtual reality equipment, allowing visitors to experience hockey firsthand.

A myriad of experiences

The fertile land, abundant water resources, and temperate climate make Kingston an ideal location for growing vegetables and fruits. Visitors looking for fresh produce should visit the Memorial Centre Farmers Market, held on Sundays near the stadium of the same name. Products at the market are verified as being produced by the vendors themselves. Gelato and wine are two of the best-selling items there.

A romantic setting by Lake Ontario.
A romantic setting by Lake Ontario.

Kingston is where the St. Lawrence River flows into Lake Ontario. Visitors shouldn't miss the opportunity to stroll along the river mouth and admire the rare beauty of the scenery. A popular route, stretching over 8km from Lake Ontario Park along the riverbank south, offers a perfect backdrop: the lake's surface stretching to the horizon on one side and ancient pine and willow trees on the other. The route also boasts plenty of restaurants, cafes, and fishing spots where visitors can stop and immerse themselves in the romantic atmosphere.

Lemoine Point Reserve is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. Originally a 136-hectare farm, it was donated by its owner to the government to be transformed into a nature park. The reserve is renowned for its diverse landscapes and habitats, featuring various environments such as ancient forests, swamps, and beaches. The best time to visit Lemoine Point Reserve is in early spring, when ducks and geese return from the south and hibernating animals like squirrels begin to awaken.

For sports enthusiasts, Kingston offers plenty of exciting activities such as surfing, kitesurfing, and kayaking. Kingston boasts six beaches, with Richardson Beach being a favorite among athletes due to its good water quality, moderate wave height and speed, and relatively unspoiled coastline. Those with a larger budget should consider renting a sailboat. Kingston was chosen as the venue for the 1976 Olympic Games in Canada.
